To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, BENJAMIN FULTON GARDNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, Illinois, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Tags, of which the following is a specification.

This invention is intended as an improvement on tags exposing to the weather, dirt and dust the writing or printing thereon. In brief a so-called jack knife tag, the interior tag being protected from dirt, dust and the weather by a case formed of exterior tags.

My invention consists in the features, details of construction and arrangement hereinafter described and claimed.

In the drawings, Figure 1, is a side elevation of the improved tag, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the movable interior tag B. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on a center line through Figs. A and B.

C, in the drawings, is a hollow pivot which binds the upper end of the tags together, and upon said pivot the interior tag moves.

In Figs. 1 and 2, a is a semicircular opening for the purpose of operating the interior tag by clutching the part of tag, B, at 8.

C and O in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 are eyelets which bind A and A together and through which twine or other suitable material may be inserted for attaching the tag to packages, etc.

The operation of my improved tag is simple. It merely consists of two outer tags forming a dust proof case for an inner card, or tag, which is pivoted at one end, opening and closing with a movement similar to the blade of a jack knife. Means are provided for this purpose by the semicircular openings in the outer tags exposing a section of tag B which may be grasped by the finger and thumb and. pulled out. Disks of paper or other suitable material are fixed to both Specification of Letters Patent.

sides of the exterior tags. These disks or washers support the pivot, reinforce the material of which the tags are made, and hold the outer tags apart at the end where they are located. This latter feature is essential to the successful operation of the improved tag; otherwise the friction on the movable tag or part would be so great it would not be practical to open or close the tag without endangering or destroying the tag. These interior disks may be fixed to the inner or outer tags, or merely slipped over the hollow pivot and placed between the outer and inner tags. An eyelet is used to rivet the lower end of the outer tag or parts of the case together. The result is a wedge shaped opening. The disks spreading the outer tags at one end and the riveted eyelet closing and bringing together the parts of the other end. At this end the friction is so great that the inner tag remains in place until operated in the manner heretofore mentioned. The wedge shaped opening forms an orifice enabling the insertion of the movable tag with accuracy and ease.

While I have described the construction, arrangement and operation of my invention with considerable fullness and detail, I wish it understood that I do not propose to confine myself to details of construction and arrangement, further than the same may be called for in my claims, and that I contemplate the use of these tags for the purposes that may necessitate changes in detail without departing from the gist of the invention.

What I regard as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In an improved tag, a movable tag, pivotally mounted within a case, said case made up of cover tags, means to hold the cover tags closely together at one end of said case, an eyelet uniting the cover tags at the opposite end of said case, said movable tag mounted upon said eyelet, means to spread the cover tags at the pivoted end to form a wedge-shaped recess within said case for the purpose specified and substantially as described.

2.
