EMMA DAVID, OF CHICO, CALIFORNIA.
SKIRT-MARKER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 17, 1910.
Application filed September 22, 1909. Serial No. 519,067.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMMA DAVID, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chico, in the county of Butte and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Skirt-Markers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to skirt and hem markers, and one of the principal objects of the same is to provide a simple device for the purpose of marking a dress skirt and indicating the width of a hem at the bottom of said skirt.
Another object is to provide a skirt and hem marker comprising a platform and a standard hinged thereto, said standard being adapted to be folded down and secured to the platform to occupy but little space when not required for use.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a skirt and hem marker comprising a platform, a standard secured thereto, and an adjustable hem rest mounted on the standard and means for marking the width of the hem.
These and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a view in elevation of the skirt and hem marker in position for use. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the hem rest removed from the standard. Fig. 4 is a view in elevation looking at the inner side of the standard. Fig. 5 is a sectional View, showing the device folded.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a platform of suitable size and shape to support a person standing upright thereon, and 2 is a standard connected by means of a hinge 3 to the platform. The standard is held in upright position by means of a spring latch 4 secured to the standard and provided with an opening 5 therein to engage a stud 6 secured to the end of the platform. When the standard 2 is folded down upon the platform 1 these two members are held together by means of a spring catch 7 provided withan opening 8, said catch being pivoted upon a stud 9 connected to the platform 1, said catch adapted to engage a stud 10 connected to the upper end of the standard 2. The standard 2 is provided with a central longitudinal slot 11. Upon the outside of the standard is a series of scale marks 12 which indicate half inches from 1 tol3 1, as shown in Fig. 1, and in line with these scale marks near the outer edges of the standard are perforations 13 designed to secure a pencil therein for marking the hem. Extending from the perforations 13 to the outer edges of the standard 2 are grooves 14.
Mounted adjustably upon the standard is a hem rest 15 provided with a sheet metal binding strip 16 having projecting guide members 17 adapted to fit the outer edges of the standard. An adjusting screw 18 eX tends into the hem rest, said screw being provided with a head 19 and a rectangular washer 20. The washer 20 is mounted in a groove 21 formed in the standard 2 to prevent the rotation of the hem rest and to clamp the same at any point within the limits of the slot 11. When the standard 2 is folded down to the platform 1, the ring or head 19 of the screw fits in a recess 22 in the platform.
The operation of my invention may be briefly described as follows:The platform may be placed upon a box or stand so as to raise it a suflicient distance to permit the operator to sit in a chair and mark the skirt. The hem rest 15 is adjusted the desired height upon the standard, and the screw 18 is tightened to hold said hem rest in position. The skirt to be marked-may be placed on a model or a person to stand upon the platform. The hem of the skirt is turned under so that its lower edge will rest upon the hem rest 15, and said hem is pinned with the points extending downward. A pencil a is placed in one of the perforations 13 at the required point to mark the hem. The person or model upon which the skirt is placed turns as the skirt is marked.
I claim 1. A skirt marker comprising a platform, a standard hinged to the platform and provided with a series of scale marks thereon, and a hem rest adjustably mounted on the standard, the standard being provided with a series of perforations in op osite edges thereof to accommodate a pencil for marking the hem.
2. A skirt and hem marker comprising a platform, a standard hinged to the platform, means for holding the standard upright on the platform, means for locking the standard parallel with the platform, a hem rest mounted adjustably upon the standard, and means for marking the hem.
3. A skirt marker, the combination of a holding said standard in elevated position platform, a standard hinged thereto, said i and for locking the same parallel With the standard having an indicating scale thereon platform.

mounted on the standard. a bind'n'm sti'ini n i J secured to said hem rest and JIOVlCl L'l with EMMA l l l l end guides, a binding screw extending into said hem rest through the slot in the stand- 10 ard, a Washer on said screw, and means for M. O. ALLEN.
