RICHARD EDWARD LEAGH, 0F COBALT, ONTARIO, CANADA.
LATCH MECHANISM FOR SPLIT STOCKS AND DIES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD EDWARD LEACH, of the town of Cobalt, in the Province of Ontario, in the Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Imgrovements in Latch Mechanism for Split tocks and Dies; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
The invention relates to improvements in latch mechanism for split stocks and dies, as described in the present specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings that form part of the same.
The invention consists essentially in the novel arrangement and construction of parts whereby the device is split centrally and securely locked and held in proper alinement in its closed position.
The objects of the invention are to provide in such devices a machine which may be quickly handled in applying and removing from the work and to furnish an arrangement of parts in which durability and simplicity are assured.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of the device in its closed position.
. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device in its open position. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view through the fastening device.
Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.
Referring to the drawings, 1 and 2 are the halves forming the stock, said halves being hinged at 3.
4 is a central hole through the halves l and 2.
5 are channels in the wall of the central hole 1.
6 are recesses in the faces of the halves 1 and 2.
7 and 8 are the halves in the die fitted into the recess 6 and extending through the hole 4: having the longitudinal channels 9 registering with the channels 5 so that the cut tings by said die may pass out.
10 are the face plates also formed in halves and securely fastened to the faces of the halves 1 and 2, said face plates having central holes 11 through which the pipe or rod to be operated on extends through.
12 is a lug projecting beyond the half piece 2 at the open end and adapted to fit into the slot 13 in the half 1 bringing the parts 1 and 2 in perfect alinement.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 11, 1909.
Patented May 17, 1910.
Serial No. 522,054.
14 is a recess in the wall of the half 2 immediately below the lug l2.
15 is a recess extending vertically through the upper side of the recess 14; and terminat ing adjacent to the top surface of the half piece 2.
16 is a pin having a threaded upper end and extending through a suitable hole into the recess 15, said pin having a latch member 17 at the inner end thereof, either forming part therewith or securely attached thereto, said latch member having the beveled surface 18 on its outer side.
19 is the head of the pin with a correspondingly threaded orifice and screwed on to the top of said pin.
20 is the catch of the latch member extending outwardly from the half piece 1 immediately below the slot 13 and formed with the upwardly extending end 21 having a curved or beveled outer surface over which the bevel surface 18 of latch member 17 may slip in closing the pieces 1 and 2.
In the use of this device, the halves of the stock are closed over the end of the pipe, the latch member 17 slipping over the catch 20 and locking the said pieces together, the lug 12 entering the slot 13 so that the said halves are in perfect alinement. As soon as the threading of the pipe or rod has been done, the latch member 17 is lifted by pulling on the head 19, thus raising said latch member so that it will clear the catch 20. During this operation, the cuttings from the pipe or rod have found their way out through the channels 5 and 9. When the halves are opened, anything remaining can be readily shaken out and the stock and die thoroughly cleaned.
What I claim as my invention is:
In a device of the class described, a split die stock having in one section thereof an alining slot out of the top and meeting edge faces and a lug projecting outwardly from the meeting face immediately below said slot, said lug having an upwardly turned outer end, the other section of said stock having an alining lug projecting from its meeting face adapted to fit into said alining slot, and a recess into said meeting face below said alining lug and extending upwardly in said section to the rear of said alining lug, said lug with the upwardly turned end extending into said slot in the closed position of the stock, a pin extending through a corresponding hole in the top Wall of a stock section and leading into said recess t0 the the upper Wall of the recess.
rear of said alining lug and having at the Signed at the town of Cobalt in the dislower end thereof an enlarged portion with trict of Nipissing in the Province of Ontario a beveled outer face forming a latch memthis sixth day of October 1909.
her and adapted to coact With the aforesaid RICHARD EDWARD LEACH. lug having the upwardly turned outer end, WVitnesses:
said pin having an adjustable head arranged PETER BADOUR,
thereon, and a spring encircling said pin ERIC WVALKER.
between the enlarged lower end thereof and 1c
