To all whom 'it may concern:

Be itv known that ll, HJALMAR LAURILA, a citizen of Finland, and subject to the Emperor of Russia, residing at Worcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new anduse- Vful Mattress, of which the following is a specication.

This invention relates to an inflatable mattress for use on beds, couches and the like.

The principal objects of the invention are to provide a exible, comfortable construction so arranged that the longitudinal edges are elevated, and also to provide a construction in which the top surface of the mattress is composed of a rubber sheet which will not hold water and which is free from the tubes forming its support so that when the mattress is inverted the cover will dep'end from the sides of the mattress, whereby when right side up water on the upper surface of the mattress will flow inside leaving the top dry, and when the mattress is inverted the water will flow out.

Further objects and advantages of the invention will. appear hereinafter.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, in which- `Figure 1 is .a plan of a mattress constructed in ccordance with this invention, and Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.

The mattress is shown as provided with a base 10 preferably formed of rubber cloth and as having a main body formed of a plurality of parallel inflatable tubes 11 and side tubes 12 along the longitudinal edges of the mattress of a `larger diameter than the main tubes. They form elevations which, will assist in preventing an occupant from rolling ed', which makes the device particu-,'-

larly adapted for infants. All these tubes are shown as connected together at one end by means'of passages 13. A valve or nipple 14 is provided through which the entire mattress can @be inflated 'at' once and through which thegair can be exhausted. It is to be observed that all of the

11 and 12 are attened on the bottom where they are cemented or otherwise fixed to the base 10 of the mattress. They are also separated from each other by leaving spaces 15 between them.

The cover 16 of the mattress is shown as forming an extension of the base 10 fitting around the outer surface of the tubes 12. This cover rests lightly on the top of the tubes l1 but is not secured thereto. Located in this cover at points preferably over the centers of the spaces 15 are parallel series of slots or perforations 17, through which water will flow to the interior of the mattress so that the top will always be dry When the mattress is inverted, the cover will drop from the tubes 11 and depend from the side tubes so that its lowest pointwill be at its center. Therefore, the water will How out again through the perforations.

At one end the outer casing (composed of the base 1() and cover 16) has a iiap 20 extending up from the base and lappin over the end of the cover. This is secure in position by buttons 21, or in any other convenient way. It can be unbuttoned and turned down having the end open so that the interior can be drained and cleaned. The
