GAGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 15, 1908. Serial No. 410,982.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, James Mansnam. Lnavnn, J11, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sonora, in the county of Tuolu'mne and State of California, have invented a new and useful Gage, of which the following is a specification.
This application is in the nature of a division of copending application, Serial No. 410,080 filed simultaneously herewith. No pioneer claims are made in this application to this broad type 01 gage, inasmuch as said claims are contained in the above entitled application and also in another application, Serial No. 410,981.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide novel, simple and efiective means for maintaining the gage stops in their operative positions, said means permitting the gage stop to be moved out of the way by the material being gaged, and also permitting the ready detachment of the gage stops.

Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view, illustrating one of the gage stops and its holding means. Figs. 4 and 5 are perspective views of other forms of the invention.

The table illustrated in Figs. 1 and-2 and designated 6, may be of any well known form and cooperating therewith is a circular saw 7, though any desired type of saw may be employed. Mounted on the table 6 is a base 8 provided with a plurality of transverse slots 9. A pair of spaced pivot rods or bars 10 and 11 are located beneath the base 8 and in the form shown in Fig. 3, have fiat sides. Gage stops 12 are pivotally mounted on one of the rods, as for instance 10, and operate in the slots 9. Each of these gage stops, as shown in Fig. 3 is provided with a socket or seat 13, that receives the rod 10, and said socket or seat has an open mouth 14 through which the rod can be passed when the stop is in a predetermined position. When in active position, however, the narrow mouth 14 is out of alinement with the narrower portion of the rod, and therefore the stop cannot be detached. Cooperating with each of the gage stops 12 is an arm 15 that is pivotally mounted between its ends on the pivot rod 11, having a seat or socket 16 to receive said rod, said seat or socket having a contracted mouth 1?, to permit the detachment of the arm. The lower portion of the arm is weighted, as shown at 18. The upper portion is provided with a bearing projection 19 rounded and engaging the rounded under edge 20 of the stop. It will thus be evident that the weighted arm constitutes a yielding support for maintaining the gage stop 17 in its elevated position and yet permits said stop to be depressed, if a board or other article to be cut is placed upon it.
A slightly different form of construction is illustrated in Fig. 4. In this embodiment, the base is designated 21, and has transverse slots 22. In each of these slots is placed a vertically sliding gage stop 23. The lower end of the stop has a slot 24 in which is engaged a pivot pin 25, said pin being carried by the oi'lset end 26 of a weighted arm 27. The arm 27 is journaled upon a pivot rod 28 located below the base 21, said arm having a socket or seat 29 that receives the pivot rod and said socket or seat being provided with an open mouth 30 through which the rod can be passed.
Still another embodiment of the invention is shown in Fig. 5. In this form of construetion, the base 31 has transverse slots 32 intersected by a longitudinal slot 33. In the transverse slots are vertically sliding gage stops, one of which. is shown at 34. These gage stops rest upon a cam support 35 that constitutes the upper end of a weighted arm 36 journaled upon a pivot rod 37 that is disposed below the base 31. The upper end of said arm 35 is substantially in the form of a hook, being provided with an open ended seat or socket 38 to receive the rod 37. It will be evident that the two structures disclosed in Figs. 4 and 5 operate in substantially the same manner as the first described embodiment.
From the foregoing it is thought that the construction, operation and many advantages of the herein described invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art, Without further description, and it will be understood that various changes in the size, shape, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a gage of the character described, the combination of a fixed base plate pro vided with slots, gage stops movable through the slots, weighted arms separate from the stops for yieldingly holding the stops in projecting relation above the base plate, the mountings of the arms being independent of each other and each weighted arm and each stop being removable to allow the placing of the stops in any one of the slots without disturbing the others.
2. In a gage of the character described, the combination with a fixed base plate provided with slots, a gage stop movable vertically through the slots, a pivot having its cross section presenting two unequal diameters, and a weighted arm having a bearing opening of a size to receive the greatest diameter of the pivot, and a mouth leading from the opening to the outside, said mouth being of a width less than the greatest diameter of the pivot to permit the removal of the weighted arm when the mouth is brought into register with the narrow portion of the pivot.
3. In a gage of the character described, the combination with a fixed base plate provided with slots, a gage stop movable vertically through the slots, a pivot located below the base plate adjacent to the said stop, and a weighted arm mounted on the pivot and acting against the stop to support the same yieldingly in projecting relation above the base plate, said weighted arm being removable from the pivot by a partial rotat-ive movement about the same.
4. In a gage of the character described, the combination of a fixed base plate provided with slots, gage stops fitting in the slots of the base plate and movable vertically therein and held against lateral movement by the same, pivotally supported weighted means below the base plate for holding the gage stops in projecting relation above the base plate, said means allowing for the independent mounting of the stops and their separate removal without disturbing the other stops.
5. In a gage of the character described, the combination with a fixed support, of a pivot arranged below the same, a gage stop movably mounted on one portion of the support, and a swinging weighted arm mounted on the pivot and detachable therefrom transversely of the pivot to permit the removal of the gage stop without disturbing the mounting thereof.
6. In a gage of the character described, the combination with a support, of a pivot associated therewith, a gage stop movably mounted on the pivot, and a swinging weighted arm having a socket or seat that receives the pivot, said socket or seat having an open side through which the pivot passes to permit the detachment and application of the arm.
7. In a gage of the character described, the combination with a base having a slot, of a gage stop slidable through the slot, a pivot located below the base, and a wei hted arm having a swinging engagement with the stop and having an open socket or seat that receives the pivot.
