Description

Letters Patent No. 95,775, dated October 12, 1869.
W. I IMPROVEMENT 11v CARPETS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same To all whom it may concern Be it known chat I, THOMAS ORossLnY, of Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Carpets; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention consists in producing a new article of manufacture in carpeting, having a back of paper, or other suitable material, corrugated and attached by an adhesive substance.
After the fabric of the carpet has been manufactured,
I attach one or more thicknesses of ordinary brown or -pet, or both, with the glutinous or adhesive mixture, and then passing them together between a calender or set of heated rollers, one of the said rollers being fluted, as shown in my patent of January, A. D. 1867.
In passing the paper and carpet through the corrugating-machine, a greater tension is applied to the carpet than to the paperback. A considerable press- 'ure is applied uponth'e tinting-rolls, and as the corrugations require a length of paper to the yard of cloth, greater by several inches than the yard of cloth, this will yield to any required stretch of the carpet Without tearing.
The points of-the corrugations will be fastened suf-.
ficiently, by the pressure, to hold it against the back of the carpet.
The pressure, and the quality and quantity of the glutinous substance, may be so regulated as to make the elasticity more or less, as may be desired.
Such ingredients as will prevent the action of moth or other insects may be advantageously mingled with the'adhesive compound.
I have referred to paper, because I regard it as the cheapest, and, in some respects, the best article that can be used for this purpose, but I do not limit myself to its use, as cloth, India rubber, gutta-percha, or other equivalent materials, may be substituted for the paper.
WVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As an article of manufacture, carpeting having a back of paper, or other suitable material, corrugated and attached thereto by an adhesive substance, as set forth.
In testimouyavhereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
THOMAS OROSSLEY.
