I II R. ABELL PIOKING MOTION FOR VERTICAL LOOMS.
APPLICATION FILED NOV. 6, 1908 W/TA/'SSES ANDREW i. GRAHAM co. mvoumccmzns wAsmNqToN. D. c.
UNTTED STATER PATENT @FFICE.
ROBERT ABELL, OF UTTOXETER, BOROUGH OF DERBY, ENGLAND.
PIOKING-MOTION FOR VERTICAL LOOlVIS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT ABELL, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Elm Tree House, Uttoxeter, New Road, in the county borough of Derby, England, have invented new and use ful Improvements in the Picking-Motion of Vertical Looms, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to effect certain improvements in the picking motion of a loom or textile machine in which the warp threads are situated in a vertical plane, the harness frames or heddles are horizontal, and which is designed to weave a number of similar fabrics in parallel vertical planes.
Referring to the drawings which form a part of this specification :-Figure 1 is an end elevation of a loom constructed and arranged according to my invention, illustrating only such parts thereof as are necessary, for the explanation of the said invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical section on line a-a of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a longitudil'lal section on line bb of Fig. 2.
In carrying out my invention I provide or form each shuttle c with a rack d on the underside thereof to engage a pinion e keyed on a shaft f running the whole length of the machine; there are two of these shafts 7, 7, one on each side of the reed frame 9, the positions of said shafts f, 7 being so arranged that the racks d on the underside of the shuttles c are in engagement with the pinions c on the shaft on one side of the reed space before they leave the pinions on the shaft on the other side; the shuttles slide upon guides or the like .9.
Both of the shafts 7, f preferably pass through one end frame 72, of the machine and on each of them at this outer end is further keyed another pinion j. Both of these pinions engage a quadrant 70 also mounted on Specification of Letters Patent.

the end frame it of the machine. This quadrant is coupled up by means of a connecting rod Z to a short crank m, the latter being keyed on to a toothed wheel 41, having two short blanks or dwells 0 of concave form on opposite sides thereof. This wheel gears with another wheel 79 fast on the driving shaft 9 of the machine and has two longer blanks or dwells r thereo The dwells on the two toothed wheels last mentioned ('11. and p respectively) are so arranged and timed that while they are in e11- gagement they give the necessary dwell or rest to the shuttles on either side to allow for the rise and fall of the reed: the toothed portions of said wheels projecting beyond the face of the dwells or rests thereon en gage as the driving shaft revolves and in combination with the quadrant 7c, pinions j, shafts 7, f pinions e and racks (Z give the requisite throw to the shuttles.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent isz- In a vertical loom, the combination of reciprocating upright shuttles, placed side by side, racks on the bottom of the shuttles, pinions engaging with said racks, horizontal shafts carrying said pinions, pinions on the ends of said shafts, a toothed quadrant engaging with the last named pinions, a pinion having dwells thereon, means for connecting said pinion with the quadrant, and a gear wheel having dwells thereon engaging with the last named pinion said gear wheel being connected with the driving means.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ROBERT ABELL.
