Description

EINEEEE STATES PATENT QEFEQE,
FRANK WETTEROTH, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOB, TO ZITTLOSEN MANUFAC- TUBING COMPANY, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, A CORPORATION OF MISSOURI.
UMBRELLA PART.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK VVn'r'rERo'rH, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Umbrella Part, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has for its object the securement of the cover of an umbrella upon an extremity of the ribs supporting the same, in such a manner that said rib extremities do not contact with the cloth, and to attain this result by a practical device which is low of cost and easy of application.
Devices have been patented which secure the cloth to an extremity of said ribs, but therein the cloth is constantly abrased by the more or less sharp end of the rod with which it is in direct contact: the material is finally worn through, and thereafter the tension put upon the cover when the umbrella is raised is not sufiiciently resisted and the joint in question falls apart or becomes useless. Such defects 1 claim to overcome by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in Which Figure 1 is a sectional view disclosing the rib of an umbrella surmounted at its outer extremity by.said device; and Fig. 2 depicts, in perspective, the cloth of the cover lying over the outer surface of the closed and rounded metal dome of my guard and a cap ready to descend thereupon to lock the material in position.
Like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and the umbrella rib is denoted by numeral 1, while the guard may be divided, for purposes of description, into a body portion or cylindrical shell 2; outstruck annular bead 3 and a domed head 4. The parts of this device may be constructed of spring metal or of any other suitable material, and said shell is entirely closed except at receiving orifice 5, which latter may be reinforced by rebending the metal at that point. Rod 1 being inserted through said orifice, its end 6 abuts the under and concave surface of dome 4; the cloth of the umbrella then being placed over the outer surface of said dome, cap 7 is forced down, its edge 8 over-riding bead 3 and being then bent inwardly against the latter to form a lock. It will be noted that said edge of said cap may be rolled inward or outward, so that when locked against said bead there is little or no danger of the cloth being broken at that point, it

being obviously desirable in such a device to eliminate sharp metal edges.
"What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is 1. in combination with the cover and ribs of an umbrella, a shell member completely incasing an extremity of each of said ribs, and a cap member incasing an extremity of the first mentioned member, a portion of the cloth of said cover disposed between said members.
2. In combination with the cover and ribs of an umbrella, a shell member completely incasing an extremity of each of said ribs, and a cap member incasing an extremity of the first mentioned member, a portion of the cloth of said cover disposed between said members, and means whereby one of said members is locked upon the other.
3. In combination with the cover and ribs of an umbrella, a shell member completely incasing an extremity of each of said ribs, and a cap member incasing an extremity of the first mentioned member, a portion of the cloth of said cover disposed between said members, and means integral with one of said members for the retention of the other of said members.
t. In combination with the cover and ribs of an umbrella, a shell member completely incasing an extremity of each of said ribs, and a cap member incasing an extremity of the first mentioned member, a portion of the cloth of said cover disposed between said members, and an annular shoulder integral with said member incasing said rib extrem ities, said cap member locked against said shoulder.
5. in combination with the cover and ribs of an umbrella, a shell member completely inc-asing an extremity of each of said ribs, a semi-elliptical shoulder upon said member, and a on p member incasing an extremity of the first mentioned member, a portion of the cloth of said cover disposed between said members, the circumferential margin of said cap member being rebent, and said rebent portion of said cap member locked against said shoulder, whereby said portion of said cover is protected from abrasion.
