HANGING CABINET.
APPLICATION FILED JAN. 20, 1910.

Specification of Letters Patent.
rammed May-1%, 193W.
Applicationflled January 20, 1910. Serial No. 539,015.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, JULftIs GALL, a citizen of the United States, residin at Ableman, in the county of Sauk an' State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hanging Cabinets, ot which the following is a specification.-
My invention relates to hangin cabinets; and it has for its object to provi e a hanging cabinet embodying such a construction that thin and inexpensive material may be utilized in the manufacture of its hangers, in such manner that the hangers are possessed of the requisite stifi'ness and strength, and the lower sections of the hangers are adjustable as to height on the upper sections thereof.
Other advantageous characteristics of the invention will be fully understood from the following description and claim when the same are read in connection with the drawings, accompanying and forming part of this specification, in which:
Figure 1 1s a perspective view of my improved cabinet in proper position for use. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same. 3 1s a detail rear elevation of one of the hangers. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail horinontal section, taken in the plane indicated by the line 4-4 of Fig. 3, looking downward. l
Similar letters designate correspondlng parts in all of the views of the drawings,
referring to which:
A is an apartment wall, and B, a piece of molding thereon.
C C are the hangers of my unproved hanging cabinet. Inasmuch as the sald hangers are identical in construction a detailed description of the one shown in Figs.
2 to 4: will. impart a definite understanding of both. 7 The hanger referred to comprises an upper section a and a lower sectlon b.'
The upper section a comprises amajor vertical portion and a hook a at the upper end thereof, ada ted to' engage the plece of" molding; an it is formed of a single piece of thin sheet-metal and in'the manner best shown in Figs. 3 and 6., it has a front thickness d which extends throughout its width, and reinforcing and stiiiening flanges a bent tight against the back of the thickness d. The lower section .b of the hanger comprises a vertical portion a horizontal arm g that reaches forward end of said vertical portion, and an oblique Fig.
om the lower portion h which serves in combination with the portions fand g to form a shelf-supsection b is formed of thin sheet-metal, and comprises a thickness '5 which extends throughout the width of the portion, and rearwardl'y and inwardly bent flanges j which are designed to straddle the vertical portion of the upper section a so as to hold the sections together and permit of the lower section being moved up and down on the upper section as occasion demands. The horizontal arm g is a continuation of the thickness a of the vertical portion 7, and said horizontal portion g corresponds in thickness to the mclined portion 7:. which is connected, adjacent its upper end, to the thickness of the vertical portion 7 through the medium or a set screw D, which set screw extends through and bears in the ortion h and the thickness'i and is designe to serve "porting stirrup. The vertical portion f of the additional purpose of engaging the 'vertical portion of the section a, so as to ad justab y fix the section b thereto. From this it follows that the section b may be adjustably positioned at various distances from the piece of molding B, according 'to the height at whichit is desired to dispose the she f E, which may be of wood, metal or any other material, and is connected with the horizontal arms g of the lower hanger sections 7) by bolts 72, as shown. I prefer to connect the shelf E- to the arms 9 as stated, but do not desire to be understood as limiting myself to the said connection, inasmuch as when desired the shelf may be simply placed on the arms I employ a back for holding the hangers C together and against swinging movement in ependently of each other, and I also utilize the said back as a stop for books or other articles laced on the shelf. I prefor to employ t e construction illustrated in the back-c". a, to have the back comprise upper and lower bars Z and m, connected at p to the front-thicknesses z of the ortions f, and bars 7 extending between and connecting the bars Z and m together at intervals in the lengththereof. I
-B y reason of the manner in which the sections a and b are constructed, it will be observed that they are possessed of great stiffness and strength, notwithstanding the thinness of the sheet-metal utilized; and it will also be observed that while the sections 6 are adapted to be readily adjusted up and down on the sections a to position the shelf at the proper height and to be as readily fixed with res ect to the sections a, there is no liability either section I) being permitted to casually move downward a, under the weight imposed on the shelf E.
In addition to the practical advantages ascribed to the improved hanging cabinet, it
will be appreciated that while the construction of the cabinet is simple and inexpensive, it is calculated to enhance rather than detract from the finished appearance of an apartment.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, 1s:
In a hangin cabinet, the combination of hangers space apart and respectively comprising an upper section of thin sheet-metal having its upper portion bent into a hook; v
a lower section having a vertical portion comprising a front thickness and flanges thereon straddling the vertical edges of the upper section, an integral arm 'bent forwardly from the lower end of the said front thickness, an integral inclined portion bent upwardly from said arm and extending between the same and the vertical portion, and a set screw bearin in said inclined portion and the front thic ness of the vertical portion and engaged with the upper section to serve the two-fold function of connecting said portion and adjustably fixing the lower section on the upper section; a back extending between and connected to the vertical portions of the lower sections; and a shelf carried on the arms of the said lower sections.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
' JULIUS GALL.
