Description

J. PFRENZINGER.
TABLE.
APPLICATION FILED NOV. 11, 1909. I I 957,089. Patented May 3, 19.10.
' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN PFRENZINGER, 0F PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
TABLE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN PFRENZINGER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have in- Vented certain new and usefullmprovements in Tables, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to tables, and more particularly to that character of table commonly styled a foldable or knock-down table, wherein the legs or supporting medium of the table are made a detachable part relative to the top of the table.
The primary object of my invention is to provide a table with simple and efiective means for detachably connecting a leg to a table top.
Another object of this invention is to provide a table with a center leg consisting of comparatively few parts, easily disassembled and quickly assembled for supporting the table.
A further object of this invention is to provide a table that can be used for extra occasions in connection with banquets and similar festivals at a hotel or club, the table being readily knocked down and stored away when not in use.
With these and such other objects as may hereinafter appear, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing forming a part of this specification wherein there is illustrated what I believe to be a practical embodiment of my invention; nevertheless, I desire it to be understood that the structural elements thereof can be varied or changed without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
In the drawing :-Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a portion of a table constructed in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is a plan, illustrating the top and bottom removed, Fig. 3 is a bottom plan of a couplin member adapted to form part of the tab e, Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the lower end of an inverted center post adapted to form part of the table, and Figs. 5 and 6 are perspective views of legs adapted to form part of the center post.
In the accompanying drawing 1 denotes a center post, preferably rectangular in cross Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 11, 1909.
Serial No. 527,506.
section and having the upper end thereof provided with a cylindrical stepped recess 2 providing a shoulder at its lower portion. Mounted in the lower portion of the recess 2 is a detachable dowel pin 3 which is locked in position by a transverse pin 3constituting a locking member and which extends through the dowel pin and post or pedestal. The lower end of the 0st 1 is provided with intersecting vertical s ots at and 5, said slots being cut at right angles to one another to provide depending oppositely disposed ,fingers 6.
In connection with the post 1, I use le 's 7 and 8, the leg 7 intermediate the en s thereof having the upper edge provided with a transverse slot 9 adapted to receive the central portion 10 of the leg 8, which is made of a depth corresponding to the slot 9 by providing the leg 8 at the lower edge thereof with a slot 11 corresponding in depth to that portion of the leg 7 between the lower end of the slot 9 and the lower edge of said leg. The legs 7 and 8 can be easily fitted to ether and then the lower end of the post 1 fitted upon said legs, whereby the slots 4 Patented May 3, 1910.
and 5 will provide clearance for the legs,
while the fingers (5 brace the legs and retain the same at right angles to one another.
The reference numeral 12 denotes a rectangular plate provided with screw openings 13 through which screws l l extend for securing the plate 12 to a batten or plank 15, which is provided with screw openings 16 for screws 17 employed for securing the batten or plank 15 to a table top 18. The table top is recessed, as at 19 to receive the plate 12, and said plate is provided with a central depending cylindrical stem 20, which extends through a central opening 21 provided therefor in the batten or plank 15. The stem 20 has the lower end thereof provided with an opening 22 adapted to receive the upper end of the dowel pin 3 mounted in the post 1, said member snugly fitting within the socket or recess 2 and abutting against the shoulder formed by the reduced portion of the socket.
By reference to Fig. l of the drawing, it will be observed that the stem is connected to the batten or plank 15 and said batten or plank is connected to the table top, the batten or plank being bound between the plate 12 and the upper end of the center post 1. It is apparent from this constructionthat I am enabled to disassemble the center support of the table whereby the parts thereof will occupy a comparatively small space for storage purposes, and when assembled provide a strong and durable center support for the table top 18.
It is preferable to make the plate 12 and the stem 20 thereof of metal to receive the dowel pin 3,. which is also of metal while the remaining parts of my improved table are made of wood, with the exception of the screws 14 and 17 Having now described my invention what I claim as new,'is i In a table, in combination, a top having a recess in its lower face, a batten arranged against the lower face of said top and having an opening, a stem plate fixed to the upper face of the batten and extending into said recess, a stem carried by the stem plate and projecting through said opening and having a socket in its lower end, means for securing the batten against the lower face of the table top, a pedestal having a plurality of legs at its lower end and abutting at its upper end against the lower face of the batten, said pedestal having its upper end formed with a stepped socket providing a shoulder against which abuts the lower end of the stem, a detachable dowel pin mounted in the lower portion of said stepped socket, projecting above the shoulder and extending into the socket formed in the lower end of i JOHN PFRENZINGER.
