TOP FOR PEPPER-BOXES AND THE LIKE.
10 which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Our invention relates to an improved top for containers for pepper, salt or other finely divided material.
Figure 1 is a view of the upper portion of a container, the extreme upper portion being shown in section; Fig. 2 is a plan view of a detail detached; Fig. 3 is a plan view of another detail; Fig. 4 is a plan view of still another detail.
1 represents a container made from any suitable material and of any suitable design, the container bein adapted to hold finely divided or powdere material such as pepper.
2 is a cap arranged to be permanently secured to the outlet end of the container. In the u per end of the cap 2 are perforations 2 an a slot 2", said slot being of a suitable size to admit a coin of any desired dimension.
3 is a seal, in this instance, in the form of a washer somewhat smaller than the upper end of the cap 2 but of sufficient size to cover the slot and perforations therein. 4 is another eap adapted to be secured outside of the cap 2 and to overstand the washer 3 and hold it in position to cover the slotted and perforated portion of the fixed cap. The cap 4 has a plurality of small perforations 4 arranged in any desired number and manner. The perforations 4 are preferably smaller than the perforations 2 and are preferably provided in a greater number than said perforations 2.
In the preferred form of construction the cap 2 is held in place by a screw thread which takes on to a corresponding screw Specification of Letters Patent.

thread at the outlet end of the container 1, said cap being permanently secured in any desired manner as by cement. The cap 4 is preferably provided with an inturned shouldered portion 4*, so that the central perforated part of the cap 4 will never come in contact with the top of the cap 2, even if the washer 3 be removed.
The foregoing construction furnishes an effective cap for sealing containers so that the contents can not be removed until the desired time. When it is desired to remove the contents the cap 4 is disconnected; the sealing washer 3 is removed, and the cap 4 is returned to place, whereupon the contents of the container may be shaken out in the customary manner. When the contents has been entirely removed the part 4 of the top may be removed and discarded and the remaining part of the top, viz., the part 2, which was permanently connected to the retainer, furnishes with said container a childs safety bank, into which coins may be insorted through slot 2'.
That we claim is:
1. A top for containers comprising a cap having a'slot therein, said cap being arranged to be secured to the outlet end of a container, a removable cap arranged to cooperate with the first mentioned cap, said removable cap having a plurality of relatively small perforations in its outer end, a removable sealing device arranged to be held between both of said caps and to completely close the slotted and perforated portions of both of said caps against the passage of material in either direction through the same, and means to hold the slotted and perforated portions of said caps apart after said sealing device is removed.
2. A top for containers comprising a cap having a slot therein, said cap being arranged to be secured to the outlet end of a container, a removable cap arranged to cooperate with the first mentioned ca said removable cap having a plurality 0 small perforations in its outer end, a removable sealing device arranged to be held bet-Ween separate the perforated and slotted portions both of said capis and to completely close the of said caps after said device is removed. 10 slotted and per 'orated portions of both of w r said caps respectively against the passage of E material in either direction through each of l said caps, and a spacing shoulder on one of Vitnesses:
said caps arranged to engage the other to fur- R. C. MITCHELL, nish a space for said sealing device and to M. E. GARRETT.
