I. S. DEMENT.
PRINTING WHEEL. APPLICATION FILED AUG. 23, 1009.

ISAAC DEMENT, OF ST. NICHOLAS, FLORIDA.
PRINTING-WHEEL.
Specification. of Letters Patent.
Patented May 3, 1910.
Appllcation filed August 23, 1909. Serial No. 514,210.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that 1', ISAAC S. DEMENT, a
i citizen of the United States, and a resident of St. Nicholas, in the county of Duval and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Printing- Wheels, of which the following, when taken 1n connection with the drawing accompanying and forming a part hereof, a full and complete description, sufficient to enable those skilled in the art to which it pertains to understand, make, and use the same.
This invention relates to printing wheels used in registering, dating, numbering, adding and other like machines The object of the invention is to obtain, at small cost, a printing wheel (provided with characters 0.. the periphery thereof) which will be light in weight and durable;
and also to obtain a printing wheel, which will, when made in large quantities, be accurately constructed, so that one thereof will be the duplicate of the others.
In the drawing referredto I have illus trated a device embodying my invention providedwvith numerals from one to zero on the periphery thereof and in which draw- Figure I is the front viewof a blank from which one member of the device is obtained. Fig". 2 is an edge elevation of the blank illust 'ated in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a front view of the'member of the device which is obtained from the blank illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. Fig. 4. is a front view of a blank from which an additional member of the device embodying th'e invention obtaiiied. Fig. 5 is a front view of the member obtained from the blank illustrated in F ig. 4, joined to the member illustratcdin Fig. 3. Fig. (3 is a vertical sectional view of a device embodying the invention on lines 6-6 of Fig. 5, viewed in the direction indicated-by the arrows, and Fig 7 is a perspective of a comb provided with fingers, by means of which fingers a plurality of the devices embodying this invention may be actuated in a determined order.
A reference letter applied to indicate a given part is used to designate such part throughout the severalfigures of the draw,- ing, wherever the same appears.
'A is a blank provided with'the central aperture a, a, and with the peripheral logs or cars B. As many lugs or cars B are made to blank A as are desired. Usually the number thereof corresponds with the number of characters on the periphery of the device.
1, 2, 3, l, 5, 6 7, 8, 9, 0, (Fig. 1), are the characters which appear on the )eriphery of the device in the construction illustrated in the drawing. These numerals are shown as raised, as appears from the parts lettered X, in Figs. 2, 3, 5 and 6 of the drawing. The broken lines C-C, Fig. 1 indicate the lines on which the several ears B are bent to lie at substantially right angles to the remain or of the blank A in the complete device. I
D, Fig. l, is a blank from which one mem ber of the device is obtained.
(l is an aperture in blank I) and d is a tongue made in the cutting out of the aperture in the blank.
E is a notch or recess on the peripheral v edge of blank D.
formed up on line C the tongue d is bent on line Z) to substantially right angles with the plane in which 'lhe part of the blank D which is between the lines C and the aper-- ture cl, lies.
When the member obtained from the blank D is forced into its determined position relative to the member obtained from the blank A. the end of the tongue d, is contained in part a of aperture a, a, of blank A; and the recess'la of blank D is between a determined pair of the ears B, B. F, Fig. 7, is a comb provided with fingers f. Comb F is designed to be moved reciprocally and actuate one or a plurality of the devices embodying this invention, in a determined manner. With this in view the f ffiofthe fingers are shaped 'so that onethereof may rest on t- 1e periphery of one (if the plurality of devices which are rotatablyfmounted on shaft Gm The recess E is made so that when thedevice is actuated by. one of the fingers of the comb illustrated in Fig. 2 and the next adjacent wheel is also to be actuated the finger actuating-the wheel of highest denomination is theshortest op of the wheels actuated thereby and "move sucli wheels to bring the zero thereof into the Zprinting line. corresponds with what is termed the deep notch in theordinary counting wheels of a series which are actuated by the fingers of a comb. I
The members obtained from blanlrsA- and D may, be joined permanently by forcing them together as hereinbefore described, when made of sheet steel or other like metal, and, in addition thereto, when such members are made of sheet brass or other like metal, they may be soldered or brazed together.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent iS 1. In a printing wheel, a sheet metal member provided with. a body portion, and providedwith a plurality of lugs arranged in planes which are concentric to the axis oi thewheel, in. combination with an additional member joined to the first named member, said additional member provided with an annular'fiange having an aperture theretl'irough, said members respectively provided with apertures concentric to said axis. a
2. In a printing wheel, a sheet metal .member provided with. a body portion, and provided with a plurality of lugs arranged in planes which are concentric to the axis of the wheel, in combination with an additional member joined to the first named member, such members respectively provided with apertures concentric to such axis, and a to ue forced out from one of such members and arranged to connect the members adjaccntto the concentric apertures.
3. In a printing wheel, a sheet metal'rnember provided with a body portion, and prothe first named member, such members rep The recess E therefore provided with a tongue forced out therefrom and arranged to connect the members adgac ent to'the concentric a ertures.
4. In a printing wheel 'a sheet metal member provided with a body portion and provided with a pluralityofflltugs respectively arranged in planes which are concentric to the axis of the wheel, in combination with an additional sheet metal member provided with a body portion and with a cylindrical portion,
such cylindrical portion having an aperture therethrough, such members oined together so that the cylindrical portion of the last named-member'forms the periphery of the l wheel between the lugs of the first named member and the aperture in the cylindrical portion arranged to come between two of suchlugs, and such members provided with apertures concentric with the axis, of the Wheel.
5. In a printing wheel a sheet metal member provided with a body portion and providcd with a plurality of lugs respectively arranged in planes which are concentric to the axis of the wheel, in combination with an additional sheet metal member provided with a body portion and with a cylindrical portion, such cylindricalportio-n having an aperturetherethrough, such members joined together so that the cylindrical portion of 'the'last named member forms the periphery of the wheel between the lugs of the first.
named member and the aperture in the, cylindrical port on arranged to come between two of suchlugs, and such members provided with apertures concentric with the axis of the wheel, and one of such members.
members respectively made of sheet metal, one-of such members provided with a plu-.
rality oi lugs and raisedchara'cters on such lugs, and such lugs arranged in plane's'which are at right angles to the body portioirof suchmember, and the other member oi? the device provided with a portion thereof forced. into a cylindrical shape and arranged to fit closely between the lugs of the named member, such cylindrically shaped portion provided with an aperture, and both such members provided with a central aperture, and-one of such members provided with a tongue forced out from the body portion thereof and arranged to form a connection between the members adjacent to the central apertures. 1 I
7. A printing wheel, consisting of two one oi'such members provided with a pluraiity of and printing characters on provided with a tongue forced out therefirst.
members respectively made of sheet metal,
such h1g5, said lugs arranged :in planes which provided with an aperture, and both said are at right angles to the body portion of members provided with a central aperture.
said member and the other member of the L 1 w 1 device provided with a portion thereof forced into a cylindrical shape and arranged In the presence of to fit closely between the lugs of the first CHARLES TURNER BROWN, named member, such cylindrical portion 701m A. ADAMS.
