ROLLING-MILL FOR ROLLING CAR-WHEELS.
, sppeieatiqn of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 3,1909. Serial No. 475,860.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I,- CAsIMIR von PHILP, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Bethlehem, Stateof Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in RollingMills for Rolling- Car-Wheels, of which the following 1s a specification, accompanied by drawings. 3
This invention relates to rolling mills for rollingcar wheels and theiobjects of the invention are to enable thetread, the edges of'the tread and the web'to be rolled in the same operation.v
Another Objectis to enable all the rolls to be adjustedv as desired.
u rt'h'er objects of the invention will hereina'fter appearv and the invention consists v'the remaining rolls are idlers.` A r'olls are provided' with adjusting means to ofthe apparatus substantially as described and claimed in this specification and shown in the accompanying 'drawings, Vi'n `Wh1cl1l lFigure 1 is' a longitudinal-sectional elevation substantiallyon the line m-m' of Fig. 2; and Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional plan View substantially on the line y-y of F 1g. v1.
' A .Referring to the drawings, Arepresents .the' .frame of the machine and `B is the car wheel blank in the process of being rolled. The web 4reducing rolls C operate upon the web o f the Wheel, thel edging rolls D operate upon the edges of the rim, the treadrolls E are adapted to round up the wheel and oper-* ate upon the tread,' and the tread pressure' roll F coperates with the web reducing rolls C toA form'the tread and flange of the wheel.
'1 Actuating means are provided for positively dr-ivingthe web reducing rolls 'and All of the adjust the rolls to the blank and to enable the, blank to be-placed inthe machine and from the rolls.'l Preferably the hub lof thel of the feathers J'.
enable the finished wheel to ber-,removed Wheel is first formed in any suitable manner 'previous to introducing the blank between the rolls. g g
-`fI-l1e.,w,eb reducing rolls C are mounted en vthe inclined spindles G which slide in the b'evelgears H butrotate therewith by means The spindles areY provided withslidino vbearingsKsliding in the guide Ways K an the thrust bearings L sliding in lthe bearings M on. the frame. .Gears H meshwith pin sans N, one being" on the POWs-shaft O and and carrying with them the the other on counter shaft P, driven fr m the power shaft by gears Q. The rolls C Patented May e, 191.0.
have web reducing surfaces a and angular grooves for rolling the -inner shoulder'sof the wheel rim.
The tread pressure roll F has a tread rolling surface c anda groove ci for rolling the ywith bevel gears cfmeshing with bevelgears Z on shaft m supported in vhousin g and provided with .bevel-'gear n meshing with bevel pinion o on shaft p from Whichgpower is applied to actuate said train of gears and rotate the rods g for moving the cross-head andarms t' longitudinally. The cylinder j and plunger h. are adapted tO'fOrCe the block j' inwardly carrying therewith armsfi and roll F. The smalljeylinder fg having Vplunger 7" connected to the housing g" is adapted to pull back or move the housing 'and its connected parts in the `opposite direc'- tion. Suitable stops s extending from side' toside of the machine are adapted to form.
ment of the block f and 'it'sconl'iecte'd parts.
These stops s are adjusted. by means ofthe wedges t connectedfto the screw threaded rods u which pass through-the adjustable sleeves -fv for regulating the initialpo'sit'ions of the wedges.' The 'rods-"u 'aref provided with gears Jw botlrn'1eshingv with central actuating gear w. Thearms are pivoted to links y whlchrln turnare plvoted at' to the -thrust bcarii'igs L so that adjustment. -o l'iarmst' adjusts the spindles Gl TheA cylinderj4 anabutment for limit-ing the inward move- '9o thus moves both the tread' pressure rollF andthe webv reducing rolls C inward.. and
cylinder moves these' rolls outward.. vFinal slight "adjustments of the rolls are made by means lof the cross-head hand the wedges t.
After 'the wheel is completed therolls- F and' C are moifedoutward or backward -gradually separating or spreadlngapart as they ino-'ve said wheel can bere'moved;
rolls"C, C continue to approach' eachother 31 meshing with gears 32 on short screw The tread. rolls YE adjacent the web reducing rolls C are mounted on slidable bearings, sliding in the guides 4, and connected to the screw threaded rods 5' having wheels 6 meshing with worms 7 ha ing' bearings in brackets 8. Bevel pinions 9 on said worms mesh with bevel gears 10 on transverse actuating shaft 11, so that rotation of said shaft enables the rolls E tobe adjusted in and out.
At the other end 0f the machine is mount! E are mounted on said frame 12 at 16 and are adjusted by saidframe. Small cylinders 17 are provided ateach side of cylinder 14 'for movingA the frame 12 outwardly. The plungers 18"01. these cylinders are connected to cross heads 19 which in turn are connected by rods 20 to the frame 12.
The inward movement of frame 12 is limited by the arm 24 engaging the head of an adjustable screw threaded rod 21 having bevel gear 22 meshing with bevel pinion 23 for adjusting said rod so as to form an ad justable stop 'for the frame.
The edging rolls D are carried on pins 25, mounted in arms 26 pivoted at 27 to the frame 12. These rolls D may be moved to and from the wheel B about the pivots 27 and fo.'l `this purpose adjusting means are provided actuated from the bevel gear 28, which mesheswith the bevel pinion 29 on transverse shaft 30 provided with `the gears threaded pins 33 having enlarged ends 34: engaging sockets 35 on .arms 26, sothat rotation of scrgws 33 adjusts the rollsD in and In' the operation of the machine alll the j rolls are first adjusted outwardly to enable the ca'r Wheel blank to befinserted. in the mill-against'the tread pressure roll F and the operation of rolling the wheel isenlarge then the rolls are moved inwardly to rolling position in contact with the blank. Darin It will `beunderstood that as 'the rollingv V PfOgSSeS the three rollsl C, C` and F are forced 4forward by the plunger k and the until `the stops .s lcontrolled by Wedges t limit the motions. As the'ldiameter ofv the wheel enlarges, the frame 12 is forced' back against the liuid pressure in the cylinder 14;. Accurate adjustment ofthe sliding bear ings of 'the rolls Elprovides for keeping the rolls accurately against the wheel to insure the wheel being truly circular. The screws g permit the reduction of the rim between rolls C and F to exactly the extent required.
According to this invention the tread rolls E and edging rolls D are adjustable inwardly and; outwardly `in a horizontal plane and the edging rolls are in addition adjustable inwardly and outwardly in a vertical plane. 'Two of the tread rolls E are also adjustable in two directions in a horizontal plane. The web reducing rolls C are adjustable to and from the center'of the machine and may be adjusted independently of the tread pressure roll, which is itself adjustable in a horizontal plane.
I claim and desire to obtain by Letters Patent the following. .Y
