To all whom tmay concern Be it known that ll, CHARlEs lL. Heisman, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Schenectady, in the county oit Sche,- nectady and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful `improvement in Disk-Forming Machines, of which improvement the following is a specification.
'My invention relates to mechanism for rolling blanks of metal into disks of desired form 1n section, and its object is to provide a machine of such character which shall be 'of substantial, and comparatively simple construction, and which shallhave the operative capacity of reducing'the metal blanks on which it acts, more nearly to the desired finished form than has heretofore been found practicable.

A periphery roll, 6, the axis of which is parallel with that of the rams, 4, 4, is journalled in a sliding block, tgwhich is fitted to .be movedlongitudinally in a guide or housing, 6b, secured to the bed, 1, by thepiston 7u, of a iuid pressure cylinder, 7, secured to the bed, at the outer end of the housing, the piston being connected to the block by a piston rod 7b. The common axis of the housing and cylinder lies in the middle longitudinal plane of the bed, l,
which plane the metal blank to be rolled is located during the operation of the machine, and the housing and cylinder are longitudinally adjustable towards and from the axial plane of the rams, 4, 4', to vary the relation of the periphery roll, 6, and the side rolls, 8, 8, hereinafter described, as from time to time required.
Two side rolls, 8, 8, of conical torm,'each of which is adaptedto act u on one side of the blank, are fixed upon roll s afts, 8a, 8a, which are inwardly and oppositely inclined, at equal angles to the axis of the rams, 4, 4, and a-re journalled in bearings on swinging carriers, 9, 9, pivotally coupled to the housing, 6b, on opposite sides of its middle longitudinal plane, by pivot bolts, 9a, fitting in clamping plates, 9d, secured to the carriers by bolts, 9e, engaging T slots therein. rlhe position of the carriers may be adjusted by' said bolts and by the insertion ot shims, to accommodate changes in the sizes of the rolls or of the metal blanks. The carriers traverse in their movements about their Pivotal axes, on rollers, 9f, journalled under the top member of the bed, 1. The carriers, 9` are formed integral with, or firmly secured to, guide arms, 9", 9h, which extend from it in the direction of the cylinder, 3, and are curved towards the middle plane of the machine, at their further ends, on which rollers, 9, are journalled. l claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a disk forming machine, the combination of a main frame or bed; a periphery roll journalled on said bed, and movable longitudinally thereon; a carriage, fitted to slide longitudinally on the bed; a. motor for imparting movement to said carriage; clamping rams, mounted on said carriage and moving ktransversely thereto; carriers,
pivotally connected to said carriage, on opposite sides of its middle longitudinal plane.; formers, Xed on said carriage, adjacent to the end thereof further from the carriers, and having inclined faces on their outer sides; and guide arms, fixed to the carriers and bearing on the inclined faces of the formers.
2. in a disk forming machine of the type described, the combination of a carrier, a roll shaft bearing thereon; a roll shaftl` fitted to rotate in said bearing; a side roll,
fixed on said shaft; a guide arm, fixed to said carrier and projecting therefrom at an angle y to the shaft bearing; and a roller, journalled on the outer end of said guide arm.
3. in a disk forming machine, of the type in which a metal blank is subjected to the forging action of .one or more side rolls; the combination of a movable` roll supporting member; a side roll journalled on said member; means for actuating said roll; means, coupled to the supporting member, for applying power to move the roll toward and from the blank; a former corresponding to the desired final contour of the disk; and means interposed between the roll and former, and adapte-d to govern the position of the roll for the purpose of giving the desired form to the disc.
