EUGENE J'. SULLIVAN, F ROARING SPRING, PENNSYLVANIA.
BOOKBINDING.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EUGENE J. SULLIVAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Roaring Spring, in the county of Blair and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bookbinding, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to book binding and, more especially, to removable covers for note books and has for its objects the production of a simple and eflicient cover for such books which will permit of the leaves being readily removed therefrom and fastened together for filing; also the production of a lower cover providing a solid writing surface and an upper cover which, while firm and affording ample protection to the leaves, yet is of such construction that it readily folds back out of the way dropping below the plane of the book.
lVit-h these objects in view, my invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described and which are shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective view of the book with the top cover opened, the leaves being in place. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the complete binding, the leaves being removed. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view taken through the fastening means. Fig. 4 is a detail plan view of the shank.
In the drawings 1 designates the ordinary pad or pile of sheets provided, near their upper end, with suitable perforations 2 adapted to receive studs or shanks 3. Studs *or shanks 3 are, preferably, cylindrical in form and terminate, at their upper end, in a head or globular portion A and, at their lower end, in a flattened portion or plate 5, of any suitable shape, formed, at oppositely disposed edges thereof, in strap or clamping portions 6. A solid cover 7 is flexibly joined to a solid back 8 and is provided, in the inner solid or stiffening material thereof, at a point adjacent said back, with perforations 9 for the reception of studs 3 and, at opposite sides of said perforations, with slots 10 for the reception of straps or clamping portions 6. Studs 3 are disposed at right an gles to the plane of cover 7 and hold the same at right angles to back 8 when the binding is in place.
An upper cover 11, flexibly joined to back 8, is provided with resilient buttons or Specification of Letters Patent.

fitted with a downwardly and slightly outwardly projecting flange portion. A cylindrical member is clamped, at its upper end, around said flange and is slit vertically, for a short distance, at intervals around its lower end, the portions between said slits being bent to form a laterally projecting flange. A resilient member, cylindrical in form and slit at one portion for the greater part of its length, surrounds the aforementioned cylindrical member and is bent, near its lower end, outwardly above said laterally projecting flange then inwardly below said flange and at right angles to the vertical axis of said cylinder. Said inturned portion is slit radially, for a short distance, the portions between said slits being turned up wardly and outwardly against the inner sur face of said first mentioned cylindrical member, thereby forming a circular opening or collar for the reception and clamping of the heads 4 of the studs or shanks. Cover 11 is further provided with a series of spaced flexible portions 13 positioned parallel with the flexible joining to the back 8 and serving the purpose of allowing said cover to be folded back out of the Way when the book is in use.
In practice my invention is constructed and operated as follows:A blank sheet of heavy cardboard, or other suitable material, of a desired size is perforated, near one end thereof, slits being made therein at opposite sides of said perforations; the strap portions of shank plates are then bent upwardly parallel to the shanks and the shanks inserted in the perforations, the straps entering the slits. The sheet is forced down firmly upon the shank plates and the straps bent inwardly and downwardly upon the sheet clamping the shanks rigidly in place. The portion adapted to receive the resilient buttons is perforated to admit the same; the other portions are put in their respective positions and the whole covered with cloth or other suitable material. The resilient buttons are then clamped in place and the binding is ready for use. A pad is perforated near one end, said perforations being spaced to receive the shanks, the shanks are inserted, the upper cover brought down and the buttons pressed down over the heads of the shanks. IV hen the pad is used up it is removed by pressing upwardly upon the sides of the cover adjacent the buttons causing them to release the shank heads. The sheets may then be bound for filing by inserting the ordinary paper fastener in the perforations.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a book binding, in combination with a back, covers flexibly joined thereto, shanks, heads at one end of said shanks, flattened plate portions at their opposite end and means, carried by said plate portions, for securing said shanks to said cover.
In a book binding, in combination with a back, covers flexibly joined thereto, shanks, heads at one end of said shanks, flattened plate portions at their opposite end, means, carried by said plate portions, for securing said shanks to one of said covers and resilient means in said other cover for clamping said cover to said shanks.
3. In a book binding, in combination with a back, covers flexibly joined thereto, one of said covers being provided with perforations interposed between slots, shanks adapted to fit said perforations, plates secured to said shanks, projections 011 said plates adapted to be received by said slots and resilient means provided in the other cover for clamping said covers in place.
at. In a book binding, in combination With a back, covers flexibly joined thereto, shanks, heads at one end of said shanks, flattened plate portions at their opposite end, means, carried by said plate portions, for securing said shanks to one of said covers, resilient means in said other cover for clamping said cover to said shanks and spaced transverse flexible portions in said cover, as and for the purposes set forth.
In a book binding, in combination with a back, covers flexibly joined thereto, one of said covers being provided with perforations interposed between slots, shanks adapted to fit said perforations, plates secured to said shanks, projections on said plates adapted to be received by said slots, resilient means provided in the other cover for clamping said covers in place and spaced transverse flexible portions in said latter cover, as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto allix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EUGENE J. SULLIVAN.
