ICE-CHOPPER.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED PRICE, a citizen of the United States, resident of Easton,
in the county of Northampton and State of Pennsylvania, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Ice-Choppers; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or ii res of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a side view of the invention. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is an end view. Fig. 4 is a detail side view of one of the blades or teeth. Fig. 5 is a section on the line 55, Fig. 4:.
The invention relates to ice choppers for hand use, and it consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, the letter a, designates the back or body which is formed of malleable iron or other suitable material and is provided at one end with a handle extension I), integral therewith. The back or body a, is hollow, being formed with a longitudinal recess 0, therein, open at the bottom, the side walls 0, of said recess being plane and parallel and the top wall 0 thereof at right angles to the wall 0. As shown the sides and top of the back are of equal thickness.
d, d, are the pick blades, having rectangular shanks or tops 03, which fit closely within the recess 0, with the top walls d of the blades abutting against the top wall 0 of the recess 0, and the side walls d of the blades in contact with the side walls of such recess. These blades are arranged close together with their shanks or tops almost if not touching within the back piece or body. The shank or top 03 of each bladeis about one half as thick as it is wide and each blade has converging curved lateral faces 6, 6, meeting in a sharp point e. The blades are each of diamond form in cross section and are secured in place within the back piece or body by rivets f, f, or other suitable means.
In the use of this device, the shock of'the blows upon the ice are taken up by the back piece or body and the securing rivets are only needed to keep the blade in place.
Owing to the special formation of the blades a strong point is provided which will not readily become broken. In case one of the blades should however become broken it may be readily removed and a new one inserted in place.
The handle extension I), is cored to reduce weight and has a hole 6, therethrough whereby it may be hung from a nail or the like.
The chopper is shown as provided with fourteen pick blades or teeth but any suitable number of blades may be employed.
The back or body a, and the handle extension b, may be formed of a single piece of sheet metal. 7
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. An ice chopper having a back piece formed with a longitudinal recess open at its bottom and having plane parallel side walls, said back piece having at one end thereof a handle extension, and a series of separate pick blades having upper end portions fitting close together in said recess in substantial contact.
2. An ice chopper having a back piece formed with a longitudinal recess open at its bottom and having plane parallel side walls, said back piece having at one end thereof a handle extension, and a series of separate pick blades having upper end portions fitting close together in said recess in substantial contact, with their top walls in contact with the top wall of said recess, said pick blades being of comparatively long slender character and having each converging lateral faces starting from said back piece and meeting in a point.
3. An ice chopper having a back piece formed with a longitudinal recess open at its bottom and having at one end thereof a handle extension, and a series of separate pick blades of diamond form in cross section fitting close together in said recess in substantial contact, said blades being of comparatively long, slender character and having each converging curved lateral faces meeting in a point.
