Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 26, 1910.
Application filed March 13, 1909. Serial No. 483,186.
To all whom tt may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY ZIMMERMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fren mont, Sandusky county, Ohio, have invented new and useful Shutter-Fasteners, of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to adjusting, locking and holding mechanism.
This invention has utility when embodied in structures adapted to be used in connection with pivotally mounted or dows, doors, or shutters.
Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of an embodiment of my invention adapted for use in connection with a shutter; Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary detail in plan of a portion of the bracket from which the shutter bar is pivoted; Fig. 3 is a section on the lines III-III, Figs. 2 and 4, showing the locking of the overlapping sections of the portion of the pivot bracket for the shutter bar; Fig. 4 isa view similar to Fig. 2 but of the other portion of the bracket; Fig. 5 is a view of the blank, or a development of the head, for the shutter bar; Fig. 6 is a plan view of the head; and Fig. 7 is a side elevation of the head, with portions broken away.
Mounted adjacent the sill 1 is the shutter 2 carrying thereon the bracket 3 in which is pivoted the uniform cross-section shutter bar 4 provided with the ambidextral club head 5, shown in Fig. 1 as resting on the rest seat 6 in the bracket 7, which bracket 7, attached to the shutter, has a handle portion 8, which additionally serves to coact with the head 5 in keeping it in position on the rest 6. On forcibly closing the shutter, the head 5 is jarred so as to fall through the opening 9 in the bracket 7 and thus lock the shutter by further engaging with the sill plate 11 on the sill 1. This sill plate is shown as having various openings or seats for the head 5, which openings or seats 10, 12, serve to partially open or bow the shutter, or hold fully closed and locked. For locking the shutter fully open, an additional sill plate 13 is provided.
The pivot bracket 3, at its attaching portions to the shutter in the back or more remote from the pivot for the bar 4, has the overlapping perforate section 14, having an eye or opening 15. Overlapped by this section 14 is the section 16 having a tongue integral therewith, which tongue 17 enters the hinged winopening 15 and is bent over to rmly lock the sections 14, 16 together, thereby stii'lening the structure and keeping the perforations for the holding screw, bolt or other device properly alined. This connection is between the two wings or shutter engaging sections of the bracket 3, which wings each have outwardly projecting portions to hold the pivot pin for mounting the eye of the rod 4 therebetween.
The blank 1S is pressed to have its similar halves not only form the head 5, but the recessed extension or seat of tubular form, whereby a rivet 19 passing through these opposing semi-tubular faces and the bar 4, results in most rmly locking lthe head in position in a neat manner, as well as thus producing a light and strong device. The club ended angularly disposed portions of the head or terminal 5 are shown as tapering toward the line of the rod 4. In operation, the enlarged portion may enter a sill plate and be engaged by the seat in the sill plate ata reduced portion, so that strain on the rod 4 tends to more firmly hold the terminal in engagement with the seat. Considering 5 as a T-head with the holding means 19 through the stem portion thereof, then there remains the head proper or cross portions of the T which are reduced in cross-section adjacent the stem, or enlarged at their ends. The shutter fastener provided with the head 5 is suitable for either right or left hand shutter, thus eliminating possibility of inistake in purchasing or mounting, while being of great advantage in manufacture and marketing, for there are no mismatches or stocks of lefts with demand for rights necessitating re-ordering.
By the embodiment shown, elimination of cast elements is possible, resulting in lighter, stronger and more symmetrical construction cheaper to manufacture. The brackets, plates and head may be from sheet steel, while the bar 4 from steel rod stock. In rounding the ends of heads 5, as more clearly shown in Fig. 7, the heads more readily enter the holes or seats in the sill plates and bracket.
What is claimed and it is desired to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A shutter fastener bracket embodying overlapping perforate sections and means integral with the sections for locking the overlapping sections together.
2. A shutter fastener bracket embodying overlapping sections, there being a tongue integral with one of the sections and an opening in the other section for the tongue to enter and lock the sections together.
3. The combination with a shutter fastener bar having at an angle therewith a terminal, of a bracket embodying a concave rest for the terminal and a locking opening adjacent the rest into which the terminal may extend, and a sill plate having a seat with which the terminal may coact when eX- tending through the locking opening in the bracket.

5. A shutter fastener comprising a straight bar, and at an angle therewith a terminal tapering toward the bar and provided with a tubular extension telescoping with the bar to connect the terminal to the bar.
6. A shutter fastener bar terminal blank comprising a cross shaped member foldable nal are reduced in cross section adjacent the .x
stem of the T portion.
9. The combination with a pivoted shutter fastener bar having an angularly disposed terminal tapered toward the direction of the line of the bar, of a sill plate having a seat for engaging the tapered portion of the terminal.
