PATENT OFFICE.
SNATCH-BLO'CK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of'Letters Patent No. 737,222, dated August 25, 1903. Application filed February 24, 1903. SerialNo. 144,745. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ELIJAH S. GRAMMER, a
My snatch-block is more especially designed for use in logging-camps, where steam winding-gear using a steel cable and strong snatchblocks are required. In such instances an opening snatch-block adapted to quickly release the bite of the cable is essential. Such a block I have designed, which may be quickly opened by simply removing the pin and allowing the sheave-shell to swing downward] y, thus immediately releasing the cable.
Finally, the object of my invention is to' provide a device of the character described that will be strong, durable, efficient and simple, and comparatively easy tdmanufacture.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved snatchblock. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of thesame partly open and showing the cross-head in section. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a bottom view of the cross-head and strap forming a part of my invention.
Reference-numeral 1' designates a sheave or pulley of the ordinary construction rotatably mounted upon a shaft 2, secured in a shell or frame 3, which comprises two substantially circular cheek-plates 4 4, connected at their rear ends by the portion 4". To the upper cheek-plate 4 is attached a strap 6, extending beyond its forward edge, and to the lower plate 4' is also attached a strap 8, shorter than the upper strap and which does not extend to the front edge of the lower plate. These straps are formed from strip metal or other like material, which is bent upon itself to form a cylindrical portion,
, the ends of the shaft 2 project.
which is provided with a cut-out portion 7, thereby forming two cylindrical projections or looking members 7 7. The ends of these straps are carried back and are secured by rivets 5 to the cheek-plates and, further, are provided. with apertures 2, through which The latter member 8 is hinged to a right-angular crosshead 9 of corresponding width by meansof a pin 11, passing through the projections 7 7and through a substantially cylindrical lug or projection 10, formed on the horizontal portion of the cross-head. The upper end of the crosshead is also provided with a lug orlocking portion 10', similar to that, 10, at the other end. A removable locking-pin 11 passes through the cylindrical projections 7 7 on the upper strap and through the said lug 10 to lock the shell or frame 3, with the cross-head, in an operative position.- It will be observed that the ends of the straps are alike, as are also the ends of the cross-head. This is done in order that the pins 11 11' may be alike and interchangeable, thus materially reducing the expense in manufacture. will be noticed thatlthe forward end of the lower plate 4' when the device is in its locked position, as shown in. Fig. 1, rests .upon the upper face of the cross-head to form a stop and to reduce the vibration incident to devices of this character; A swivel 14 is journaled in the Vertical part of the crosshead and held therein by the head or upset part 15. A link connects the said swivel with a hook 16 of any desired construction.
The operation of my device is as follows: Assuming that the book 16 has been attached to some article and it is desired to pass a rope around the pulley, the pin 11 is withdrawn. Thereupon the device opens by reason of the greater weight of the rear portion hinging upon the pin 11, as illustrated in Fig. 2. The cable or rope is then thrown, over the forward end of the strap 6 to engage the pulley or sheave and the device relock'ed in an operative position, asseen in Fig. I.
It will be evident that in case of necessity the pin 11 may be removed, causing the device to hinge on pin 11', or both pins may be removed,
thus separating the cross head from the frame and pulley; but this is not the usual practice.
Further, it
I do not wish to confine my invention to the exact details above enumerated and described, as I may make various changes and alterations wholly within the scope of my claims and Without departing from the spirit of my invention;
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a snatch-block, the combination of a sheave-shell, a sheave,a shaft passing through said sheave-shell and sheave, a right-angular cross-head, lugs provided on the ends of said cross-head, straps doubled upon themselves to form cylindrical locking members, said straps secured to said sheave-shell and receiving the ends of said shaft, and pins passing through said cylindrical locking 1nembers and through said lugs, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In combination with the angular cross head, an approximately U-shaped shell, a sheave journaled in said shell, a short trip secured to one side of said shell and having one of its ends pivoted to one end of said cross-head, an elongated strip secured to the opposite side of the said shell, means for securing said last-named strip to the said crosshead and a swivel secured to said crosshead intermediate said strips.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
