Description

intrll giet-ee tmf @am f Letters Patent No. 95,622, dated October 5, 1 869.`
' IMPRovED SPRING fion BEDS, BER-ras', cAmsEATs, am.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the lame.
To whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NTS. WHIPPLE, of Detroit, in the county of Wayne, and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring-Seats for Cars, Berths, Beds, 8vo.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, andcxact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making part of this speciiication, in which- Figure lis a top `view of a ,frame with my springseatattached, and covered with wire-cloth or gauze.
Figure 2 is a reverse view of a frame with my spring-seat attached. f'
Figure 3 shows the springs, interlocked by Ia continuous wire. v p
Figure 4 shows the springs, connected by independent hook-wires.
-The nature of my invention consists in securing to rods, so connected as to form a frame, a series of coiled springs, said. springs being interlockedv one with the other, by means of a continuons wire, or otherwise connected by means of short independent wires, which are provided with hooked ends.
The advantages of this arrangement are readily discernible.
The springs being connected as they are, any pressure upon the same is equalized, thus preventing the strain being concentrated on a single spring, and bev sides, thesprings are so' interlcked that agreater degrecl of elasticity is afforded. Also, the springs and their connectonsbeing all of. metal, a degree of durability is insured that is possessed by no other spring.
'lo enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention,y I will now proceedto describe its con- I struction and operation. y
A is a rectangular frame, and may be either the xed seat of the chair, bed, or berth, or an independent frame, to be secured thereto.
To this frame I secure, bymeans of eye-bolts a a, the rods A A'. y
Around .these rods A A are coiled springs B B.
These springs B Bl are so secured to the rods A A as 'to form loops b b, said loops extending out toward the centre of the frame A. y
The springs B B are connected together by a continuous wire, G, said wire being so bent as to form a series of tongues, c c. Over these tongues c c pas the springs B B.
The springs B B are thus all firmly and securely the looped ends b b of attached together, but at the same` time are so connected that the utmost freedom inoperation is allowed. The arrangement, as wellas the connection, is clearly shown in tig. 3.
Instead ofI connecting the springs B B by the continuons wire G, they may besecured by independent wires D D, each'having hooked ends d d, by means of which they are secured to the looped ends b b of the springs B B.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-.-
The combination of the springs B B, the continuous wire C, or independent wires D D, the whole being so arranged as to .operate substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing wit- DGSSGS.
