UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB \VOLF AND \VILLIAM F. MOBELL, OF OUTCHOGUE, NEWV YORK.
SPRING-SEAT FOR WAGONS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 367,772, dated August 2. 1887.
Application filed May 26, 1887. Serial No. 239,439. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, J A0013 XVOLF and W IL- LIAM F. MoRELL, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Outchogue,-in the cou nty of Suffolk and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring'Sea-ts for lVagons; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked there on, which form a part of this specification.
Our invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in spring-seats for wagons,
the object of our invention being to provide a cheap, simple, and effective spring-seat, the parts of which are so organized that they will re-enforce each other and a large amount of spring play will be permitted without permitting excessive depression of the spring or seat or increasing the resistance of the spring.
YVith the above ends in view, our invention consists in the construction and combination of the parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and specifically pointed outin the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate our invention, Figure 1 is a front view of a spri ng-seat constructed in accordance with our invention. Fig. 2 is a side view, and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of a loop which is attached to the bottom of the seat.
A refers to a seat of a wagon, which is of ordinary construction, to the under side of which is attached by suitable wood screws or bolts plates a, which have attached thereto loops a. These loops, of which there are four or more, are attached near the corners at the under side of the seat.
B refers to flat springs, which are of a greater length than the seat-board, which springs are secured to the under side of the, seat by clip, which may extend around the central portion of the springs, or by bolts which pass through perforations in the centers thereof, these springs B diverging from the bottom board of the seat outwardly and downwardly, and they are provided near their ends with perforations 7 b, through which pass bolts or screws for attaching bars 0 thereto, which bars not only serve to connect the ends of each of the springs B B to each other, but also serve as stops, which will abut against the sideboards of the wagon, so as to prevent the seat from slipping off, and also limit the play of the springs B B when they are depressed, so as to abut against the side-boards. The perforations 2) permit the bar 0 being adjusted upon the spring,so as to suit wagon-bodies of dilierent width.
The ends of the springs B B project beyond the bars 0 0, so as to bear upon the upper edge of the wagon-body and form a support for the seat.
On the upper edge of the springs B B, at a point about midway between the centers and ends, are secured plates, (1 (l, and above these plates are' attached by suitable rivet-s or clips short leaves D D, which project upwardly from the springs B B, the ends of which are bent slightly, so as to be nearly parallel with the seat and pass through loops at a.
By the construction hereinbefore set forth we provide a spring-seat which is simple in construction and easy riding, and which will tend to maintain itself in a horizontal position even though the weightis placed on oncside or end of the same.
Ve are aware that it is not broadly new to provideawagou with a removable spring seat, or provide the running-gear of a vehicle with longitudinal springs having leaves which extend to the body, and we do not therefore claim such as our invention; but
\Vhat we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 1 1. The combination, with a wagon-seat, of the parallel springs B, rigidly secured to the seat at its longitudinal center and connected at their ends by adjustable bars 0, the springleaves D, secured to the upper sides of springs B, midway between their ends and centers, and loops secured near the ends of the seat to receive the outer end of said spring leaves, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with a wagon-seat provided on itsunder side with loops near the corners, the parallel springs B, secured to the seat at the center and provided at their outer ends with elongated slots, bars 0, adjustably secured to the outer ends of said springs by In testimony whereof we affix our signatures bolts passing through said slots, plates d, sein presence of two witnesses.

tially as described. M. A. FLEET.
