Vehicle Spring.

UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
SEYMOUR VAN NOSTRAND, OF STORMVILLE, NEW YORK.
VEHICLE-SPRING.
c SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 236,281, dated January 4, 1881.
Application filed August 4, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SEYMOUR VAN Nos- TRAND, of Stormville, in the county of D utchess and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Vehicle-Spring, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide an adjustable vehicle-spring of superior elasticity and strength,wh0se elasticity can readily be increased or diminished at will.
Figure 1 is a plan of the spring attached to the side bars of a wagon. Fig. 2 is atransverse section on line as m, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged side elevation ofa clip holding the end of a transverse spring to a side spring of the Vehicle-spring. Fig. etis an enlarged end elevation of the same. Fig. 5 is an enlarged side elevation of a'clip and coupling securing the end of a side spring to a side bar ofa wagon. Fig. 6 is an enlarged end elevation of the same. Fig. 7 is an enlarged plan of the coupling.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings, A A represent the side bars of a vehicle, and B B the connected'end bars thereof.
. O is the spring, the ends 70 la of whose side springs, O O, are rigidly secured on the under side of the side bars, A A, by means of the clips and couplings D E.
The clips D straddle the sidebars, AA, and have then-ends entered into the holes a a of the couplings E E, and the couplings E E are secured on said clips D l) by the nuts I) b, that are screwed on the ends of said clips D D.
The ends ofthe side springs, 0' O, are entered between the depending lugs 01 d of the couplings E, and are there firmly held on the pins or bolts 0 0, that pass through said lugs 01 01, parallel with the side bars, AA, and through the end eyes, ff, of the said springs C O.
The transverse or cross springs, G G, of the spring 0 cross from one to the other of the side springs, O O, beneath the same, forming the H-shaped spring 0, and have their ends connected to the said springs G O by the clips F F, that straddle said springs O U, and have their ends entered through the said springs G G and secured by nuts 9 g. This spring 0 offers not only an elastic supportto the vehicle-body that is designed to be placed upon the cross-springs G G, but also a torsional or twisting resistance thereto, because of the downward-inclined curve of the ends of the side springs, O G. The springs G G are connected with the side springs,C 0, in such a manner thatthe former may be movednearer to each other than herein shown, to increase the elasticity of the spring 0, by'bringing the bearing-point of the vehicle-body nearer the center thereof; or said springs G G may be moved apart to increase the stiffness of said spring 0.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The H-shaped spring 0, consisting of the sides 0 O and cross-pieces G G, the former having bent ends k, downwardly inclined, to adapt the spring to be applied, as shown and described.
SEYMOUR VAN NOSTRAND.
