ASSIGNOB FOUL-FIF'I'HS TO EDWARD H.

HOLDING DEVICE FOR ACCOUNT FILES AND REGISTERS.
Be it known that I, LEON E. LEONARD, a
Improvement in Holding Devices for Account Fi les and Registers, of which the fol- 1s a ecification.
Th1s invention relates more particularly to improvements in files or account registers, for holding duplicate sales slips, accounts or other papers, in which a series of leaves or easably retaining the sales slips in place 1 The invention has especial reference to the sales slips and the manner in which they are secured to the leaf, but is not limited to holdmay be usedin various other constructions where it is desired to detachably secure cards, slips and the like to opposite sides of a leaf-or page.
' The object of this invention is to provide durable construction which can be economically formed from strips of metalandread: ily secured to the leaf, and when so secured, will hold the sales slips firmly in place there on, and in which the clips are disposed o pofor enga ement with t e opposite clip to re tain the atter in its holding position and to In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a sectional e evation of a file or account register the'leaves of which are provided with holding clips embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a lan view, on an enlar ed scale, of one of t 0 leaves detached. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary perspective view of one of the leaves. 4 is a longitudinal section 1g. 5 is a perspective view of one transverse section thereof, on an enlarged scale, in line 6-6, Fig. 4. Fig. 7 is a frag mental'y plan view of a leaf and holding clip, showing additional means for e leaf. Fig. 8 is a longitudina 'the leaf extend in op Specification of Letters l'ateut. Patented Apr. 26, 1910. Application filed August 14,1809. Serial No. 512,820. 1
the means which are employed for holding a the sales slips u on the leaves, and which are constructed as ollows: Each leaf is provided on its opposite faces with a plurality of holding clips D which are arranged opposite to each other and preferabl extend wise of the leaf. These c ips. are. formed from strips of sprin metal and are all of the same shape. Ea'c clip extends through an opening or slot e in the leaf in which it fits sufiiciently close so as to be held from turn'ing'therem. On one side of the leaf the clip is provided with a spring holdin arm f for th sales slips, and on the other si e with of corresponding clips on opposite sides of osite irectionsand the free end of theho ing arm of each'clip .is ada ted to en age under the catch portion 9 of t e other 0 ip for locking the arms in their'holdin position and securing the chps to ether an m place on the leaf.
he free end of the holding arm f preferably has a portion thereof cutaway to reduce the Width of this end and the catch 9 is made of substantially the same width as this reduced end of the holding arm and has a ortion thereof which extends inwardly and bears against the face of the leaf to form a stop It for the end of the arm f which preengthan off at catch portion g. The holding arms vents the arm from being shoved past the catch in lockin the same. This facilitates the ease with w ich the arm f can be locked in its holding or closed position as the stop arrests the holding arm in proper position for engagement with the catch. The catch portion isalso preferably provided opposite to'the stop It with an inwardly extending lip h for retaining the end of the holding arm in position under the catch. Th1s-1n sures a secure engagement between the end of the arm and the catch g. To release the holding arm'for removing the sales slips it is only necessar to press the free end of the arm toward t e leaf and slide it from under the catch.
The clip D is preferably provided adjacent to the slot e with substantially parallel portions z which bear against. the opposite tral portion will press against the sales slipor slips and will thus serve to hold the slips against the face of the leaf irrespective of the number thereof. The adjacent ends of the clips which are in alinement with each other on the leaf are preferably securedin the same slot, as shown at Z in Fi 4, thus economizin space and avoiding t e necessity of cuttlng separate slots for each clip.
' I claim as my invention:
1. In a file or the like, the combination of a leaf provided with, slots, and spring clips arranged o posite to each. other on opposite sides 0 the leaf, each clip having at one end a part which extends through one of said slots and is provided with a catch for engaging the adjacent free end of the opposite clip, substantiall as set forth.
2. In a file or the l ke, the combination of a leaf provided with slots, and spring clips end"a part w site arranged opposite to each other on opposite sldes of the leaf, each clip consisting of a strip of springxmetal bent to' provide at one ich extends through one of said slots and is provided with a catch for engag ng the adjacent free end of the oppoc p, substantially as set forth. 9 3. In a file or the like, the combination of 'a leaf provided with slots, and spring clips arranged opposite to each other on opposite sides of the leaf, each clip having at one end a part which extends through one of said slots; and is rovided with acatch for engaging thea jacent free end of the op ositeclip and having substantially paralle portions which bear against opposite sides bf the leaf, substantial y as set orth.
'4. In a file or the like, the combination of a leaf provided with slots, and spring clips arranged oplposite to each other on opposite sides of the af each cli having at one end a part which extends tl irough one of said slots and is provided with a catch for engaging the adjacent free. end of the opposite clip, said catch having at one side a part WhlCh extends toward the leaf and forms a stop for the end of the clip, substantially as set forth.
5. In-a file or-the like," the combinationof a leaf provided with slots, and spring clips arranged opposite to each other on opposite sides of the leaf, each cliphaving at one end a part which extends through one of said slots and is provided with a catch for engaging the ad acent free end of the opposite clip, said catch having at one side a part which extends toward the leaf and forms a stop for the end of the cli and at the opposite side a retaining lip or such fend, substantially as set forth. a
6. In a file or the like, the combination of a leaf provided with slots, and spring-clips arranged opposite to each other on opposite sides of the leaf, each clip having atone end a part which extends through one of said slots and is provided with a catch for engaging the adj acent free end of the opposite clip 4 and having substantially aralle portions which bear against opposite sides of the leaf and a fastening device passing through said bearin portions for securing the lip to the leaf, su stantially as set forth.
Witness my hand this-31st day of July, 1909.
