I I WIN, M
UNITED STATES CHARLES H. HOPKINS,
PATIENT OFFICE.
OF MINOA, NEW YORK.
STATION-INDICATOR AND ADVERTISING DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. HOPKINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minoa, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Station-Indicators and Advertising Devices; and I do hereby declare the followin to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in station indicators, advertising apparatus, etc., and comprises essentially a series of cards upon which any matter desired to be displayed appears and so arranged that the cards may be automat c ally released and allowed to fall by gravity to exposed position where the matter may be conveniently read.
The invention comprises various details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved sign and advertising display apparatus. Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view vertically through the apparatus. F i 3 is a detail view of the releasing slide. ig. 4 is a detail view of a series of cards showing recesses out of alinement with one another in the edges thereof. Fig. 5 is a perspective view showing a modified form of the apparatus in which the cards are lowered from the bottom of a series within a casing, and Fig. 6 is a vertical section taken through the apparatus.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a box or casing which may be of any size or shape and designed to be fastened at any suitable location. Mounted within the casing are the wires B upon which a series of cards, designated by letter C, are mounted, said wires passing through registering apertures in the cards. Each of the cards 1s provided with notches D formed in two of the opposite edges thereof and the notches in the various cards are positioned preferably at Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Apr, 26, 1910.
Application filed April 19,

different locations so that these notches will not be in registration with one another when a series of cards are adjusted within the casing and in readiness to be displayed. Said wires 13 are preferably of the shape shown in the drawings and so arranged that, when a card is released, it will fall by gravity from its former position within the casing and be suspended from the lower end of the wire in the manner shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings and thus displaying the advertising matter upon the face of the card.
A slide, designated by letter E, is mounted within the casing and provided with lugs F projecting from two of the opposite edges thereof and said lugs upon the slide are of such size as to conveniently pass through the notches formed in the opposite edges of the cards. Said slide is mounted in suitable guideways formed within the casing and may be actuated by any suitable lever mechanism either automatic or manually whereby, as the slide is reciprocated, the toothed lugs which are spaced apart a distance equal to any two of the notches upon the cards will register with the notches in the outermost card of the series, thus allowing the card to fall by gravity from the casing to its lowest position where it hangs upon the lower arms of the wires.
In Fig. 5 of the drawings, I show a slight modification of my invention in which the cards are adapted to drop from the bottom of the casing rather than the side and in which modified form the slide K is mounted in the bottom of the casing and provided with the usual lugs and adapted to support the superimposed pile of cards. In order to cause the cards to readily fall from the casing when they come singly with their notches in registration with the lugs of the slide, a weight or spring may be applied to the top of the ile in order to cause the same to more rea ily fall from the casing. In the modified form, the slide may be either manually or automatically operated as may be desired without in any way departing from the s irit of my invention.
What I claim to lie new is A card display apparatus comprising a casing, open upon one face, the end walls of the casing adjacent to the open face bein provided with registering apertures, a r0 bent upon itself to form two parallel arms and adapted to have longitudinal movements through said registering apertures, lugs projeoting from the arms of said rod toward each other, spaced apart and positioned in parallel planes, card retaining wires having their inner ends fastened within the casing and extending through said open face and curved'downwardly, a series of cards having apertures to receive said wires and having notches in their opposite edges Which are out of registration along corresponding edges of the cards, a lever pivoted at one end to the wall of said casing and having a slot therein, a threaded pin fixed to said rod at the portion thereof where it is bent to form two arms, said pin passing through the slot in said lever and a thumb screw fitted to the 15 end of said threaded pin, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
