To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, THEODORE C. NELSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at I'Iaddonfield, in the county of Camden and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Baskets, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in baskets, and more particularly designed for use in carrying heavy material, such as coal and the like, the object of the invention being to construct a cane or wicker basket with improved reinforcing means, whereby the bottom of the basket will be strengthened by means of metal straps or bands passing longitudinally around the basket, and secured to metal plates above and below the cane or wicker bottom, so as to give to the basket the maximum of strength with a minimum of weight.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, and combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1, is a view in longitudinal section illustrating my improvements. Fig. 2, is a view in section on the line 2--2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3, is a view in section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4, is a view of the open end of the basket.

1 represents the basket proper, which is preferably of cane or wicker having heavy bands 2 around the upper edge, which latter serve as hand holds as shown at 3, where the basket is cut away to accommodate the fingers as illustrated at 4. Cross bars 5 preferably of wood, are disposed across the bottom of the basket. A metal plate 6 is located on the inside of the basket against the bottom, and a similar metal plate 7 is located against the under face of the bottom, and against the bars 5, and all of these parts are secured to ether by rivets 8.

9 represents metal straps, which are bent at their ends around bands 2, and extend down the sides of the basket, and between the wicker bottom 10, and the outside plate 7 and are securely riveted as shown. There are eight of such bands as above described, illustrated, but I would of course have it understood that I am in no wise limited to any particular number.

Heavy metal straps 11 passing below the bottom plate 7 are secured to the latter, and at their ends are fastened in the wicker or cane work of the basket in any approved manner. These heavy straps serve to sustain a large part of the wear and strengthen the bottom of the basket as well. Rivets 8 are also employed to secure the several straps and bands above described to the metal plate. The heads of these rivets below the basket serve to take a large portion of the wear, in addition, making the device an extremely ri id one.

Ill'ith my improvements as above explained, it will be noted that a large portion of the strain upon the bottom is sustained by the heavy bands 2 on the upper edge of the basket, as the straps 9 are passed around these heavy bands and secured together, so that in lifting the basket by means of the hand holds 2, a direct pull is had upon the bottom, so as to sustain, directly upon said metal straps 9, the greater portion of the strain.

Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not restrict myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the claim.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent is:
