Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL J. GOOOH, OF OXFORD, NORTH CAROLINA.
BASKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 578,037, dated March 2, 1897.
Application filed April 11, 1895.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DANIEL J. GOOOH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oxford, in the county of Granville and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful-Improvements in Baskets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others'skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in baskets; and it consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of devices that will be more fully set forth hereinafter and particularly pointed out in the claim.
The object of my invention is to produce a basket which is capable of being manufactured at low cost, is durable, and is braced against strain and wear at those points which are most exposed to such contingencies.
Figure 1 is a view in plan, showing the inside of the basket, the splints of which the body is made being in plain outline and the braces, for clearness of illustration, being shaded. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the exterior of the basket. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 00 00, Fig. 1, showing more clearly the positions occupied, respectively, by the braces and the splints. Fig. at is a detached detail View of one of the plates with the handle attached.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the basket, B the inner rim, and O the outer rim.
The basket may be constructed of any suitable material, preferably in this instance of splints interwoven in the manner illustrated. The rims are each constructed of a single piece of wood, the inner rim B being secured to the splints independently of the outer rim, so that should the latter rim become detached from the basket the splints Will be held together and so prevent destruction of basket. The outer rim is held in place by means of nails or rivets, which pass through both the splints and the inner rim and have their ends clenched, so as to prevent accidental loss, as from loosening caused by use of the basket. By this manner of securing the rims to the splints the edge of the basket is strongly reinforced and is rendered capable of withstanding a great deal of hard usage.
Serial No. 545,411. (No model.)
The interior braces D, to which reference has been made, extend straight across the bottom of the basket and are secured thereto throughout their length by any suitable form of fastening device. The ends of these braces are secured between the rims preferably by the nails that serveto bind the rims and the splints together, although, if desired, separate fasteners may be employed.
The exterior braces E are arranged at right angles to the braces D and are secured in vplace by fasteners passing through the splints,
the braces Where they intersect being also secured together. The center one of the exterior braces has its ends secured between the rims in the same manner as the braces D, and the two outside exterior braces have their ends extended up to the outer rim and are there secured firmly in place by means of plates F, secured, respectively, to the outer rim and to the said outside braces. The plates are each provided with an opening through which extends an eye G, to which is hinged by a link or the like a handle H. The handle is constructed of a shank'I, which engages the eye'G, and a handpiece J of wood or other suitable material. By means of the link connection the handle, when not in use, will hang down and thus be out'of the way, but may readily be turned up when it is to be used. This particular form of handle has the advantage of not occupying much space, so that the baskets may be packed in a small space for shipment. I
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A basket having the outer rim 0 and the braces E, the plates F secured to said outer rim and braces, and the handles composed of the shanks I and handpieces J, said handles having the inner ends of their shanks hinged to the plates, for the purpose set forth, substantially as described."
In testimony whereofl affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DANIEL J. GOOOH.
