TYPE HOLDER 0R CLAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 1S), 1910.
and useful Improvementsin Type. ilolders or Clamps, of which the following is a specitieation.
This invention relates to a type-holder or clamp of that character in which one or more type may be easily and quickly clamped in line at any desired distance apart and'my objectis to produce a device of this character by which type can be` easily, quickly and reliably secured in line and n, which is of simple, strong, durable and cheap construction, a further object being to produce a device of this character wherep by thc distribution of a line of type after service 'may be quickly and conveniently ef ected.
lith these objects in view and others as hereinafter appear, the invention consists in certain novel and peculiar features of construction and organization as hereinafter described and claimed; and in order tout it may be fully understood reference is to bc had to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure l, is a perspective view of a type holder or clamp embodying my invention, and also shows a type in operative relation thereto. F ig. 2, is an inverted plan view of the saine.V Fig.l3, is a similar View with the ltype holder or clam) open. Fig. 4, is a cross section on the line IV-IV of Fig. 2. Fig. 5, is a similar view on the line V--V of vFig. 3.
In thcsaid drawing, 1 indicates a base plate provided with an upvrardly-project ing flange 2 atits outer margin formed with .a longitudinal groove or channel l at its inner side.
"l indicates a companion base-plate arranged opposite and in the same horizontal plane as plate l and like. the latter provided witlran u]wardly-projecting flange 5 having a longitudinal grvmve t at its inner side` and said' plate is provided at its underside will: a lonj," "rco ict-ess T and iu itsV inner edgevwith a plurality of notches S to receive tongues Y9. 4pri-)jecting'from the inner edge of plate 1. the tongues and notches S forming' guides to insure direct. transverse movement.
of the base plates, and to prevent independent mii/tement. vertically of said plates one of them is provided with a series of 'transversc plus 10 and the other with sockets v11 to slidingly receive said pins. K
The tongues t) are provided with depend ing pins l: en" ra; in" Y parallel oblique slot-s lt in a thin metal slide 'oar l5 occupying recess i'. llalc l is also provided with de.- pending headed pins ltS engaging and preferably countcrsunk in longitudinal slots 1i' in slide hai' 15,'said slide bai' being also provided with a transverse slot. 1S engaged by a crank E20 of a short lever 19 pivoted at :2t to plate 4,. the lower edge of plate 4 being cut away at 22 to continue the recess to the outer edge of said plate atoiie end to accoimnmlatc the operation of said lever and a suitable forked tool, not shown, to be engaeed with the reduced outer end 23 of said lever to operate the saine, said lever by preference heilig of such length that. when standing longitudinally of the plate its free end shall terminate about flush with the adjacent end of the plate in order that two of the bars com osed of plates 1 and 4 may be arranged en( wise together should such arrangement be found desirable.
'hcn the lever is operated its crank 20 presses against one wall of slot` 1S and forces bar 15 to slide in the saine direction and through the medium of the oblique or inclined slots and pins` .l2 force the plates 1 and l apart as shown in Fig. lVhen thus arranged one or more types may be secured on the upper side of the ba r between llaliges :2 and 5, it beingr noticed by reference to Fig. l that thc type 2i-representing the letter l--is mounted upon a block 2 3 provided with grooves 2li in its ends receiving the inivardly-projecling portions of tlanges L' and 5, portions :ZT of the block forming tongues engaging grooves il and t'. the portions 2S of thc block overl ving said inwardly-projccting portions of llanges '.2 and .\fler the type is placed in the position described, the lever is swung in the direction indicated by the arrow Fig. tifand in such action slides bar 15 longitudinally in the reverse direction to that described. this=action tbrmigli the instrumentality of the pins 12 and inclined slots i4 causing plates 1 and 4 to approach and thi'is clamp the type reliably in position.
When it is desired todistribute the type,
vthat is rcdispose them'in the proper recep.
. .to leave the type. free to slide. The holder Y y 1s then successively pointed toward the re- .t ehol er andinto such receptacles; this action not only facilitating the distribution of the type but guarding against mistakes inV returnm 'them to their ro er receptacles;
It ivil be understoo ofp course that the combined thickness of the holder and ty e equals what is known as. type-high in t ie trade and that with a holder of this character, thinmetal type may be mounted onI wood or other cheap bases, thus cl'ecting a great saving of type metal and enabling a job printer to keep in stoclc'ia greater variety of type of both size and kind to moet the ea'igencies of his business.
It will also he understood that the holders -mav he' of curved form as well as straight.
rom the above description it. will be apparent that I hive produced a type holder or clamp possessingthe-'features of adva mage enumerated as desirable and .I wish .it to be understood that I do not rdcsire to be restricted to the exact details of construction shown and described, but that I reserve the right to make such changes in the form, proportion, detail construction and arrangc ment of the parts as properly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention 'what I claim as new andA desire to secure by Ilettcrs-Iatent is;- 1.' A type holder or clamp. comprising a pair of plates movable relatively toward and from each other and provided with up- Wardlyprojeeting flanges having longitudinal grooves in their inner faces, one of said plates having a longitudinal recess in its lower side, and a plurality of pins depending into said recess, a longitudinally slidablc bar occupying said recess and provided with parallel oblique slots engaging certain of said ins and with longitudinal slots engaging t ie remaining pins, means for'gniiliug said plates in their movement toward und from each other, and inf-ans for impartingF sliding movement in one direction or the other to said bar to cause said plates to move apart or toward each other.
2. A type holder or clamp, comprising a pair of plates movable relatively toward and from each other and. provided with up wardly-projecting flanges having longitudinal grooves in their inner faces, one of said plaies having a longitudinal recess in its lower side, and a plurality of pins depending into said recess, a longitudinally slidable har occupying said recess and provided with parallel oblique slots engaging certain of said pins and with longitudinal slots engaging the remaining pins, means for guiding said plates in their movement toward and from each other, and a lever pivoted to the recessed plate and engaging the slidahle har and adapted when swung in one dire@ tion or the other to impart longitudinal movement. to said bar in one direction or the other.
3. A type holder or clamp, comprising a pair of plates movable relatively toivai-d and fiom each other and proiidt-.d with u wardly-projecting flanges having longitu inal grooves in their inner faces, one of said plaies having a longitudinal recess in its lower side, and a plurality of pins depending into said recess, a longitudinally slidablc ha; occupying said recess and provided with parallel oblique slots engaging certain-of said pins and with longitudinal slots engag ing the remaining pins, transverse pins projecting from one of said plates into the opposing edge of the com anion plate, and vmeans for` imparting sliing movement in one direction or the other to said bar to canse said plates to move apart or toward each other.
4. 'A type holder or clamp, comprising a pair of plates movable relativel toward and from each other and provi( ed with u wardly-projccting flanges having longitudinal grooves in their inner faces, one of said plates having a longitudinal recess in its lower side, und a plurality of pins depending into said recess, a longitudinally-slidahle bar occupying said recess and provided with parallel oblique slots engaging certain of .said pins` and with longitudinal slots engaging the remaining pins, transverse pins projecting from one of said platcsf'nto the opposing edge of the companion paite, tongues projecting from one of said plates and engaging the other to guard against independent endwise movement of said plates, and means for imparting sliding movement if; one direction or the other to said bar to cause said` plates to move apart or toward each other.
ln testimony whereof I aix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
