Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SIDNEY E. ONEAL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wortham, in the county of Harrison and State of Mississippi, have invented a new and useful Repair-Link, of which the following is a specification.
The improved repair link forming the subject matter of this application for Letters Patent is intended specifically as an improvement upon the devices disclosed in Patent 89,282, granted April 27, 1869, to James F. Brewer, and upon Patent 599,927, granted March 1, 18-98, to Isaac B. Brooks.
The invention consists of a repair link, one end of which is provided with a lug adapted to register in an eye, and it is the obj ect of this invention to improve the construction of the lug and the eye and so to fashion the portions of the link carrying the lug and the eye, that the parts shall cooperate in a novel manner to form a repair link of unusual strength and durability.
The drawings show but one form of the invention and it is to be understood that changes, properly falling within the scope of what is claimed may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Similar numerals of reference are assembled to denote corresponding parts throughout the figures of the drawings, wherein;
Figure 1 is a top plan, the parts being disposed as in Fig. 2; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the open links; and Fig. 3 is a side elevation showing the link with its parts united.
The link, which in the accompanying drawings is denoted by the numeral 1, is open at one side to form overlapping arms 2 and 3, the extremities of which stand normally spaced apart. The arm 2 is provided with an eye 4, flaring toward the arm 3, and the arm 3 is terminally provided with an upstanding, tapering lug 5 adapted to register in and extend through the eye 4:. The extremity of the arm 2 is slightly downbent as denoted by the numeral 6, and the arm 8 is slightly cut away to form a shoulder 7 adapted to receive the extremity of the portions 6 of the arm 2. Upon its upper face, the arm 2 is provided with longitudinally extending grooves communicatin with the eye 4, the grooves being denoted by the numeral 8.
The link is fashioned from a good grade of wrought iron or other metal, which may readily be wrought cold, and when the lug 5 is extended through the eye 4; the extremity of the lug may readily be butt-ended to fill the grooves 8 without heating the lug. From the foregoing construction, should a chain break in the field and at a distance from a forge, one of the links of my invention may be brought into use, the lug 5 being beaten down, cold, by means of any accessible tool, as shown at 10 in Fig. 3. As the lug 5 enters the eye 4:, the extremity of the, portion 6, will abut against the shoulder 7, and as the extremity of the lug 5 is beaten down, the portion 6 of the arm will straighten out under the malleation, forcing the ends of the arms closely together, and effecting a rigid and secure union of the parts.
Obviously, by tapering or flaring the eye 4: and the lug 5, a secure wedge union between the parts may be effected, any mechanical imperfection in the fit of the lug 5 in the eye A being taken up by the cooperation of the parts 6 and 7 Having thus described my invention what is claimed is:
A repair link of unequal dimensions, terminating upon one of its longer sides in overlapped arms, one of the arms being pro vided with a tapering eye and with superficial grooves extended longitudinally of said arm upon either side of the eye and communicating with the eye, the other arm being provided with an upstanding tapering lug to extend through the eye and arranged to be beaten into the grooves, the extremity of the eye-carrying arm being downbent toward the lug-carrying arm, and the lug-carrying arm having a shoulder to receive the end of the downbent portion of the eye-carrying arm.
