GEORG-E COOVER, OF OSKALOOSA, IOWA.
LUBRICATOR.
Specicaton of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 16, 1917. Serial No. 142,670.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE CoovER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Oskaloosa, in the-county of Mahaska and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lubricators, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to improve- .ments in lubricators of the piston rod type, and is designed for the purpose of providing a device of this character that is comparatively inexpensive of production and maintenance, but which is durable, and efficient in performing the functions for which it is intended.
rIhe device is particularly applicable for use in connection with the reciprocating piston rod of steam engines of the locomotive type and while in use it not only prolongs the life of the piston and packing of the engine, but at the same time prevents the escape of steam with its consequent danger and annoyance to the locomotive driver or engineer because of the fact that the escaping steam would otherwise obscure his vision.
As applied according to my invention the lubricator or swab holder is practically indestructible, and it is also capable of utilizing a low or inferior grade of swab material in connection with lubricating oil, all of` which factors and features are necessary and instrumental in furnishing a desirable and efficient device for the purpose of lubricating the piston rod.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of my invention as now actually in use on railroad locomotives, constructed according to the best mode I have so far devised for the practical application of the principles of my invention, and this particular form of the invention has proven highly satisfactory in its use.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a lubricator according to my invention, shown applied to a piston rod.
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the upper guide bar and piston rod, showing the lubricator as inA front elevation on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view on line 3-8 of Fig. 2.
In order to clearly illustrate the construction and use of my invention I have eX- Copies of this patent may be obtained for emplied in the drawings a portion of a steam engine, the piston rod being indicated by the numeral 1, the cross head being designated by the numeral 2; and 3 and 4 indieating the upper and lower guide bars for the cross head. i
In its construction the device is desiguedly simple, and it embodies the use of the long metallic back plate 5 which may be of stamped sheet metal, together with its complementary clamp plate 6, and these two plates are hinged together at 7. At their lower ends the back plate and the clamp plate are broadened and forked or bifurcated as at 8 and 9, the forks or bifurcations being formed around a semicircular opening in the ends of the plates so that the plates may be suspended over the piston rod without coming in direct contact therewith. These bifurcated plates fit neatly around the upper portion of the piston rod and hold between them the lubricating swab 10 which conforms to the shape of the piston rod and is held in contact therewith so that its contained lubricant, preferably oil, may be applied thereto.
To securely clamp the swab between the two plates I employ a pair of protractile springs 11, 11 on the guide pins 12, 12 and these springs force the upper free end of the clamp plate away from the back plate while the lower end of the clamp plate is forced toward the back plate to securely clamp the swab. As clearly seen in thedrawings the device is attached to the upper guide rail 3 by means of the flange 13 of the back plate, a top plate 14, and the bolts 15 and nuts 16, and of course is located in the proper position to be most effective in lubricating the piston rod as it reciprocates through the swab and bifurcated plate ends.
What I claim is In a piston rod lubricator, the combination with a back plate having a bifurcated end, of a clamp plate hinged to said plate and formed with a bifurcated end and a swab held between said bifurcated plates, a spring above the hinge urging the clamp plate to retain the swab between the bifurcated ends, and means for attaching the device to a cross head guide.
In testimony whereof I aiiiX my signature.
GEORGE coovEn.
