Description

.ploding and bursting b expansion.
UNITE STATES P TENT oFFteE.
MAX BRESLAUER, OF CHARLOTTENEURG, GERMANY, ASSIGNOR TO THE FIR/M OF MINIMAX CONSOLIDATED LIMITED. OF LONDON. ENGLAND, AND NEURUPP INf GERMANY;
but-g1 near Berlin. Kingdom of Prussia, and
(lerman Empire. have invented a certain new and usetul lrocess for Extinguishing Burning llenzin. Petroleum, and the 'Like.
of which the following-is a specification.
This invention has reference to a new way ofextinguishing tlames and contlagrations from light,-easily volatile hydrocarbons in.
bulk. such as benzin. petrolem-n', .oiljof turpentine. as well as the thirties of bmning mineral .oils and vegetable oils, animal tats and the like which it is impossibleto extinguish b water, both on account of the low specitic gravity of the burning liquids which causes them to float on top oi the water. and on account of their exceedingly high -heat of combustion which cannot be lowered to an appreciable extent by the mere addition of water.
\ly invention is intended to overcome the dilliculties. heretofore experienced in the attempts toquench tires of this kind by'heaping sand. earth or the like on the seat of the tire. or by the application of compressed gases of highspecitie gravity. such as carbonic acid-or sull urous acid under pressure the application of which as restricted in view of the fact. that the containers. conat a considerable distance from the seat oi.
the' tire. in order to prevent them from 'exin my invention ox \;'-haloid compounds ol sult'ul' are made to act upon the seat ot the tire. these agents being coni'erted by heat into sullur dioxid very etlicient and powerful lire extinguishing agents. The oxy-compounds of sulfur Specification of Letters Patent. "Appficatioatikd July 26. 1907. Serial No. 385,666.
and chlorin both of which are PROCESS OF EXTING UISHING BURNING BENZIN, 8w.
Patented Apr. 19, 1910.
mentioned are preferablv applied as lit uids which may be thrown out. in form of jetLs from sprinklers. tire"engine on from-hand operated tire ext inguish'ers by ii'ieziits'loficoim pressed gases. t'orced intol the tcnitainerr, containing the said fire extinguishing l q-' uids. It is obvious, that such containers may be kept at a considerable distance from the seat of the tire. inasmuch as the compressed gases. contained therein; are only employed as a means of delivering the tire extinguishing liquid onto the seat of the tire.
Among the various oxy-haloid compounds of sulfur, suitable for the purpose in question. l'may mention the following as instances :hnlt'nryl -chlorid. SQ Cl thionyl ehlorid, SOCL, sulfur oxy tetra chlorid bl. .()..(l and 1') 'ro-sulfur \'l-chlorid. S O Cl. All qf these form sult'nr-dioxid, S0 and chlori'n gas by decomposition by heat, thionyl-chlorid forming sulfur.-sulfur-dioxid. and sulfur-mono-chlorid SC-l in the tirst place which are subsequently burned, to torm 'sult'ur dioxid, and, chlorin.
It is evident. that instead of the. oxychlorin-comp ounds of sulfur, the bromin,
and iodin compounds may also be used.
What I claim and desire to secure by Let.- ters Patent of the United States, is:'
The herein described process of extinguishing tires which consists in squirting a liquid containing oxy-haloid-compounds of sulfur by means of compressed gases, thereby eonverting said liquid into jets and into a stun). and ejecting said spray and jets of liquid onto the seat of tire.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name this 12th day of July 1907, in the presence ol two subscribing witnesses.
' MAX BR ESLAUER.
