INDEX SYSTEM.
Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed September 28, 1909.
Patented Apr. 12, 1910. Serial No. 519,861.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EUGENE A. BAGBY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Louisville, in the county of J efi'erson and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and Improved Index System, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to index systems, and more particularly to a system having a plurality of detachable leaves each provided with a plurality of projecting tabs, the corresponding tabs being arranged in superposition to form series, and a leaf having a plurality of topic headings each corresponding to one of the series of tabs, the tabs serving for the purpose of indexing.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive index system by means of which memoranda and the like referring to a variety of topics, can be conveniently entered in suitable groupings, which serves to facilitate the entering of memoranda upon the proper pages, and by means of which the memoranda are classified and grouped so that they can be re ferred to without loss of time.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts to be more fully described hereinafter and particularly set forth in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which Figure 1 is a plan view of an embodiment of my invention showing the book open and illustrating the heading page; Fig. 2 is a similar View showing certain of the pages intended to receive memoranda, and having parts broken away; tive view of the book showing it open.
Before proceeding to a more detailed explanation of my invention, it should be clearly understood that while it is particularly useful in the form of a note-book for memoranda of various kinds, it can also be advantageously employed for other like purposes, for example, as an account-book, in which accounts can be classified and properly indexed, or as part of a system of bookkeeping. Needless to say, the form of the book itself, as well as the dimensions and the number of pages, can be varied in accordance with individual preference and and Fig. 3 1s a perspeo.
special conditions. Furthermore, the headings upon the heading or title pages may be of any suitable kind, depending upon the purposes for which the book is employed.
y leaving off the covers, and having the leaves separate, my invention can also be employed in a card index system.
eferring more particularly to the drawings, I have shown for example, a pocket note-book, opening lengthwise, and having covers 10 of the usual form. Bound within the covers is a plurality of leaves 11, each preferably having near the back a line of perforations 12, so that the leaf is detachable. At the edge, each leaf is provided with a plurality of projecting tongues or tabs 13. The corresponding tabs are superposed, and constitute series, shown for example, as four in number. I also employ a heading leaf 14, having printed or otherwise indicated thereon title headings 15, each of which corresponds to one of the series of tabs. These headings of course depend upon the purposes for which the book is employed, and those illustrated herewith have merely been chosen as examples of the different headings which can be used.
f so desired, a corresponding heading leaf can be included in the book, at the back thereof, so that both sides of the leaves can be employed in the customary manner, working from both the front and the back of the book.
By providing a plurality of tabs, the memoranda as they are entered may at once be placed under the heading, or in the group, to which they properly belong, and which have been properly assigned thereto. Information gathered and classified in this way is thus made conveniently accessible for later reference. Each leaf when filled, can either be detached and filed away, or can be left in the book. The heading page is cut away at the end to expose the tongues, so that it will be seen at a glance to which grouping each series of tongues belongs. When it is desired to permit a leaf covered with memoranda to remain in the book, the tongue of this leaf may be partly removed, clipping it as indicated by the dotted lines 16 or 17, which leaves just enough of the tongue projecting, to locate the leaf which has been filled and allowed to remain, but
not enough to interfere with the thumb in readily finding the next tongue underneath, in the same series.
If so desired, the book may be sub-divided by leaves 18 of difierent colors, at suitable intervals. These colored leaves also constitute heading leaves and thus permit a greater number of groupings or topics to be contained within one book.
Before beginning to enter memoranda upon a leaf, it is necessary to remove every tongue on that lea-f except the one belonging to the series assigned to that topic, so that when a filled leaf is removed or remains in the book with its tongue clipped, the next underlying tongue in that series will mark the new leaf for receiving meinoranda belonging to the same topic.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. An index system having a plurality of detachable leaves each having a plurality of tabs, certain of said tabs being arranged in series, and a leaf having a plurality of topic headings each relating to one of said series of tabs.
2. An index system having a plurality of detachable leaves each having a plurality of tabs, said tabs being arranged in plurality of series, and a leaf having a plurality of group headings each relating to one of said series of tabs, each of said tabs being adapted to be manipulated to expose the next successive tab under the same.
3. An index system, comprising a plurality of detachable leaves each having a plurality of detachable tabs said tabs being arranged in a plurality of series wherein said tabs are superposed, and a plurality of heading leaves each having a plurality of group titles indicated thereon, each of said titles being alined with one of said series of tabs.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EUGENE A. BAGBY.
