UN t T E S T art? ALONZO THOMPSON, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
CORRESPONDENCE FOLDER.
Application filed October 2, 1922. Serial No. 591,993.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known. that-I, ALoNzo THOMPSON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Correspondence Folders, of which-the following is a specification.
This invention relates to correspondence folders, and has particular reference to a device of this character which is especially adapted to follow up correspondence or ac- The primary object of this invention is to provide a folder of the above mentioned character which has means associated therewith for efficiently following up corresponda fixed course from the beginning until the closing.
A further object of this invention is to provide a follow up system for correspondence folders or the like, which is extremely simple in operation, easy and inexpensive to manufacture, and thoroughly reliable in use.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art to which it appertains, and the particular features of novelty will be pointed out in the appended claims.
'In the drawings forming a part of this specification, and wherein similar characters of reference denote similar parts in the several views:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of a filing cabinet having the present invention associated therewith, I I
Fig. 2 is a plan view of one of the folders embodying the present invention,
F ig. 3 is an end View of the folder shown in Fig. 2, and
Fig. 4 is a perspective view clips used with the folder.
Referring now, more particularly to the drawings, 1 denotes a filing cabinet having one or more drawers 2, which are of any usual commercial construction.
The device embodying the present invention is clearly illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3, and comprises a file or folder, formed preferably of a single piece of material, usually paper or the like, bent upon itself at 3, forming front and rear sections 4 and 5, respectively, said rear section 5 being slightly larger than section 4.
of one of the At the upper portion of section 5, and extending substantially across the entire width of the section are indicia which are the essential parts of the follow up system of the invention.
These indicia comprise the months of the year, January to December inclusive, as shown at 6, and the days of the month, from 1 to 31, inclusive, as illustrated at 7. These indicia are placed 1n one row extendingacross the width of the folder for a purpose to be hereafter described.
A space 8 is left at the upper left hand corner of section 5, for the purpose of inserting the file number of the correspondent of the particular folder.
Associated with each folder are two clips 9 and 10, each provided with a finger tab, 11 and 12, respectively tab 11 being red, and tab 12 being blue. As shown in Fig. 4, each clip is formed in such a manner as to provide an opening in the front face thereof, as shown at 13, in order that the indicia on the folder will be visible when the clip is applied thereto.
The file is so folded upon itself as to leave a space 14 between the line of indicia 6, 7, and 8, and the top of section 4, for the insertion of certain data such as the name and address of the correspondent, etc.
In use, for example, we will assume that a communication has been received from a new correspondent on March 5th. A folder will be made out for this correspondent, having his name and address and any other pertinent information on space 14 of section 5, and his file number'on space 8. p
In the ordinary course of business, this correspondents communication is answered immediately, and same having been done, a clip 9 having a red tab 11 is placed on the folder on March, and a clip 10 having a blue tab 12 is then placed on the day of the month on which a follow up letter should be written in the event that an answer to the first letter has not been received.
It is obvious that when a large number of these folders are used in one cabinet, the red and blue tabs will present substantially straight lines, extending from the front of the drawer toward the rear thereof, the months of the year being in one side of the drawer, and the days of the month in the placed, or printed, certain chaotic condition such as is present when the ill days of the months and the months of the year are mixed promiscuously.
It is believed that the invention, as above described, will be apparent to those skilled in the art to which it appertains, but-I desire it understood that the drawings are for illustrative purposes only, and that variouschanges in the form and proportion of the device may be resorted to within the scope' pondence having'n'ea'r the upper edge therej of means for following up correspondence in said folder, saidmeans comprising indicia of the months of the year and the days of the month, arranged substantially in a straight line across the width of the folder. 2. A correspondence folder formed of a single piece of material folded upon itself in such a manner as to leave a space at the upper portion ofone of the sections above the upper edge of the other section, means occupying a portion of the above-mentioned spacefor following up correspondence in said folder, said means comprising indicia of the months of the year and the days of the month arranged substantially in a straight line across the width of the folder with the days of the month on one side of the months of the year.
In testimony whereof I hereby aflix my 35 signature.
ALONZO THOMPSON.
