ALBERT SGI-IUMACI-IER, OF STET'IIN, GERMANY.
KNAPSACK AND THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 12, 1910.
Application filed December 10, 1909. Serial No. 532,392.
To all whom'it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT SCHUMACHER, a subject of the German Emperor, residing at Stettin, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knapsacks and the Like; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates generally to knapsacks and particularly to so-called rucksacks' or game-bags. These bags which are worn on the back were heretofore carried so thatthe material of the bag lay directly on the back of the wearer. lVhen worn for a long time this arrangement is inconvenient since the air is entirely kept away from the back of the wearer and any solid bodies, as e. g. boots, in the bag exercise unequal pressure on the back.
A primary object of my invention is to remedy these defects. I arrangethat the pressure of the load is taken up by a device and distributed uniformly on the back of the wearer; the troublesome heating and perspiration otherwise caused is avoided by air being afforded free access to the back of the wearer.
My improved knapsack comprises in com; bination an elastic frame, which lies on the shoulder straps of the rucksack or knapsack and between these straps and the bag or knapsack proper, and a rucksack, knapsack, bag or the like. The frame takes up the pressure of the bag or knapsack and imparts it to thestraps; the pressure then acts uniformly on the back of the wearer and, what is very material, can be placed on less sensitive parts of the back.
Some illustrative embodiments of my invention are represented by way of example in the accompanying drawing wherein:
Figure l is a side elevation showing one form, whereas Fig. 2 is a likeview of another form, and Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the form of my invent-ion shown in Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawing, a, a are the straps which lie directly on the body of the wearer and are worn in well-known manner by placing them over the shoulders. On these straps a are attached elastic metal bows Z), Z) on which the bag or knapsack 0 rests. The latter may be detachably attached above to the straps a and hang down freely over the frame comprising the bows and straps or it may also be connected below with the straps a, a.
In the modified illustrative embodiment shown in Fig. 2, besides the bows Z), 6 additional elastic bows 6', b are arranged under the same in order to be able better to distribute the forces when large knapsacks are used. For military knapsacks the elastic bows are made somewhat flat so that the knapsack does not stand off so far from the back of the wearer.
I claim:
1. A knapsack support comprising flexible straps adapted to lie directly on the back of the wearer, and resilient bowed pieces fixed at both ends to the straps and curving outward from the latter and from the back of the wearer, whereby a load resting on said pieces is held out of cont-act with the back.
2. A knapsack comprising flexible straps adapted to lie directly on the back of the wearer, resilient bows secured to the straps near the shoulder portions thereof and running longitudinally of the, straps and curving outward therefrom, and a receptacle secured to the straps and resting on the .bows.
3. A knapsack comprising flexible straps adapted to lie against the back of the wearer, resilient permanently bowed pieces superposed on the strap and secured thereto at both of their ends and curving outward therefrom and a receptacle resting on said bowed pieces.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALBERT SOHUMAGHER.
Witnesses:
EMIL UHLMANN, OTTO KOEBKE.
