INCANDESCENT- LAMP SOCKET.
Specification of Letters Patent Eaten-1 ed A 12, 1910 Application filed August 20, 1908. Serial No. 449,442;
T all it may concern:
Be it known that I, Howunp B. Saracens, a citizen of the United States, residlng at S henectady, county of Schenectady, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Impro ements i Incand entrg Sockets, of which the following is a. spec I cation. v This invention relates to sockets for infi andescent electric lamps, and its object is to simplify the construction and lessen the cost ofmanufacture of a socket'of that class in which the lam holding member, such as the screw-threads shell contact, is siviveled so 15 asto turn freely and prevent the lamp from 4 being removed unless said shell is locked.
Such sockets have been patented heretofore and the present" invention consists simly in an improvement of the locking device y means of which an authorized person can temporaril lock the swiveled shell when a lamp isto e-removed or inserted.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a side elevation of a lamp socket embodyzainginy invention;-Fig. 2 is aside elevation the outer shell 01'. casing removed; Fig. is a longitudinal section, showing the *swiveled contact unlocked; and Fi .4 is a f sectional side elevation showingsai contact "The cap 2 with theinsulating lining 3, porcelain base 4, key 5, screw threadeds'hellc'ontact 6 and insulated center contact 7. The latter 35 bridge 9 secured-to the. base by screws 10. The 'flanged head 7- of-the center contact clamps a disk ll -of insulating material against the bottom of the shell contact 6 and a so against the bridge 9+the center of the shell bottom being cut away so that itis' not in contact with the-bridge. The peripheral ortion of the shell bottom-bears against the Base 4. This construction enables: the shell to rotate with the center contact and concentric therewith, without'any lost motion endwlse. 4 The corner of'the shell contact, where its] wall and bottoml ine'et, has several radial, shoulders formed by notches'12 cut in it, and cos era-ting with said notches is a sprin latc consisting. of a strip of resilient meta having aflange 13'at one end secured to the ,by a nut 14,- en aging base 4, preferably i with ascrew-15 w 1ch-. 1s secured insai bases prevented from .moving has a shank' 8 mounted to rotate freely ina tending le The resilient strip-has two parallel fin-. gers 16., 17, the former inclining away from thebjase and carrying a small block 18 of insulation adapted to engage, with the 5hou1- ders of a notch 12, and the other haying an indentatiol'l 19 to receive the barrel of a key 20. The ward 21 of said key is shit ed to fit the keyhole 22 in the shell 1 an -is adapted to bear upon the outer'surface of the finger 16. Since said finger f cc. to move-in a plnne'ra dial to the {rise and stands normally outside of the shell socket as shown in Fig. 3, the action of the lrey 2 0 when turned on its radial axis, is to slide its ward 21 along the inclined outer surface of the-finger and press it radially inward until the block 18" enters a notch 12 and thereby locks the shell contact 6. or in case no notch. is opposite the'finger it will be arrested by' the periphery and deflected sons; to snap into'a notch upon angular mov ement of the contact shell. When thus-locked, a lamp can be screwed into said contact or removed therefrom. But whenthe key turned back and pulledout, the finger 16 springs outwardly and unlocks the shell con-I] tact, so that any"atempt to unscrew a lamp only results in rotating said-contact; This mode of constructing the locking device is sim 1e and inexpensivqfand it is'easily its-:3... sem led upon the base 4, being housed suitable recess 23 in theside. thereof-mid sideWisehy the Side wa1lsofthe'reces's.
What I claim as new and 1 A lamp socket. comprising a rotatable screw-threaded contact I rovidedwith aradial'shoulder, and a-radially-movable sprin" latch .adapted'toengage said shoulder, sai latch comprising a resilient strip.secured at: one end .to the base-of said socket ande'x tending-lengthwise thereof. Y -2.'A lam socket comprising a rotatable screw-threa ed contact provided with-a radial shoulder, and a radially movable spr' latch adapted .to engage said shoulder,sa-i latch comprisin a resilient strip secured at. one end to the ass of said socket and .ex-

outwardlysocket comprising .3. A lam a rotatable-I -screw-three ed contact prov-i ed. with 111- dial shoulders, a spring latch" adapted'to] engage with said shoulders and normally I "5 by Letters Patent of, the United States, is,
thwise thereof, and inclining 5".
clined outwardly from the base of said socket, and a rotatable key having" a ward adapted to engage with said inclined latch and force it radiallyinward.
4. A lamp socket comprising a base providedwith a side recess, a rotatable screwthreaded contact shell provided with a redial shoulder, and asprin latch mounted in the recess of the base an adapted to engage the shoulder of the contact shell.
5. A lam socket comprising a rotatable screW-tbrea ed contact shell, and a resilient strip secured atone end to the base of said socket and havin two, fingers, onevserving as a s ring latch or said shell and the other afi'or in a bearing for a key which operates said M51.
6; A lam socket com rising a rotatable 'screwthrea edcontact shell provided with radial shoulders, a spring finger adapted to engage withsaid shoulders, and a key having a ward adapted to slide alon said finger and force it into engagement with a shoulder.
"radial shoulders, at r d to en age with said shell provided with ra resilient strip having.
