PATENT OFFICE.
' HARVEY HUBBELL, O'E'BRIDGEPORT,CONNECTICUT.
SOCKET-SHELL-CAP FASTENING.
T b all whom it may concern; 1 3e it known that I, HARVEY HUBBELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bridgeport, county of Fairfield, State of 5 Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Socket-Shell-Cap Fastening, of which the following is'a specification. i
This invention has for its object to provide simple and inexpensive means for attaching the caps to electric socket shells, the essenn tial requlrementsbeing that the cap be rig-- idly secu'red to the shell, that'it be readily removable therefrom when required, that the attachment be easily and quickly made and that the 1 arts lock with a snap when placed in the loc ing position.
"With'these and other objects in View I have devised the simple and novel construction which I will now describe', referring to the accompanying drawing forming a partot.
this specification and using reference characters to indicate the several parts:
Figure 1 is an elevation of anelectric socket jshell having its cap secured in place by means of my novel fastening; Fig. 2 a
view of the cap inverted; Fig. 3 a view ofthe socket shell inverted; Fig.4 an enlarged detail sectional view on the line 4-4 in Fig. 1, showing the parts-in the locked position; and the top ofthe socket gage the loc ing in from the hole in the cap.
10 denotes an e the socket key (not shown), with two or mor pressed outward from the metal of the shell in circumferential al'inenient a short distance I below the .top-ofthe shell and with,an out-' wardlyprojecting locking lug 13 located contiguousfto recess 11 and to the topof the shell:
14 denotes the cap which is provided at its provided with a.= plurality of recesses 17 5,0 (threein the present instance) corres )onding in number with the ribs 12 upo the sl adapted toreeeive said ribs freely. Above groove 15 and contiguous to one of the recesses 17 is a hole 18 which is adapted to receive the locking lug with a snap engage- Specification of Letters Patent. ectric socket shell which is niade of spring metal and'is provided with 35 the usual .recess 11 .to receive the shank of ribs 12 (three in the pr'esentinstance) kill and Patented Feb. .1. 1, 1908.
v The lower portion of the face of said lug may. be beveled oil' slightly, as at 19, to .facilitate the removal of the cap when the from hole 18.
The operation is as follows; When the cap is in place on the shell, to disengage the cap the'operator presses inward upon the top of l the shell contiguous to the locking lug and to recess 11 'sulliciently to disengage the looking lug from hole 18. He thenrotates the cap su'lliciently 'to place recesses 17 in alinement with ribs 12 when the cap may be drawn oti readily. In attaching the cap, the operator places the cap over shellwith recesses 17 in alinement with the ribs, pressingthe cap on until the lower wall of the circumferential groove has iassed the ribs and then rotates the cap until the looking lug snaps into hole 18, which looks thecap securely to the shell and renders it impossible to remove the cap without first disengaging the locking lug from hole 18 and rotating the cap or the shell as may be, until' recesses 17 am the ribs are in-alinement.
' Having thus described my invention l, 'cla'iinz.
, 1. The combination. with a socket shell having a plurality olloxternalribs in cireu'niferential alinemcnt and a-loekingt-lu g of a at its lower end, the lower wall of which is provided with -recesses which receive the ribs freely, and ahole above the groove which is adaptcdto receive the locking lug with a snap engagement when'the ribs-are 1 in.'thcgroove and the cap is-rotated.
2. Thecombination with a socket "shell having in one side a key recess, anout'wardly projecting locking lug contiguous to the u per edge and to the key recess, and a piilralitykfi circunitcrentially alined ribs, of a cap having at its lower end an internal circumferential groove, the lower wall of said groove being =ceiye the ribs freely,
groovehich receives a snap engagement.
