SASH-LOCK.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EUGENE O. DANIELS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented a. certain new and useful Sash-Lock; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to sash-locks; and has for its object the provision of simple, strong and eflicient means which is capable of locking either or both upper and lower sashes of a window at any degree of opening desired for the purpose of ventilation, and is capable of being easily and quickly applied or removed without the use of screws or the like, and without liability of marring or injuring the woodwork with which it engages, and which is small, light and inexpensive of construction.
The operation, construction and arrangement of the parts of the invention are fully described in the following specification, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of one form of my invention in locked engagement with a window. Fig. 2 is a section of such device on the line 00 ac in Fig. l, and Fig. 3 is a side view of a modified form of my device.
Referring to the preferred form of the invention, 1 designates what may be termed the casing block, which is shown in the present instance as being provided at opposite edges with legs or flanges 2, projecting in the same direction at right-angles thereto. These legs or flanges are intended to seat within a sash-runway or groove 3 of a window casing, and to hold the face of the block 1 substantially in the plane of the outer sides of the casing strips 1, which combine to form the groove or grooves 3, as shown. The legs 2 are preferably disposed transversely of the casing groove in which they are positioned to adapt them to abut at one end against the edge of the outer casing strip 4, and are cut away, as at 5, intermediate their ends to freely span the Specification of Letters Patent.

7 designates the sash-engaging or boltmember of the lock and is slidingly carried by the block 1 for movements transversely of the casing. This bolt-member is slidingly retained in engagement with the block 1 by the guide-fingers 8 at one side thereof and by the rotary-cam 9, which is disposed without such member and has its spindle proj ecting from the block 1 through a longitu dinal slot 10 in the bolt 7. The bolt 7 is intended to have its outer end thrust against the side of a sash 11 and for this reason has such end broadened, as at 12, to form a broadened bearing surface to prevent a marring of the sash, and is provided intermediate its ends with a lug 13, which cooperates with the cam 9, when the latter is turned, to efiect an outward movement of the bolt. To facilitate a turning of the cam its outer surface is provided with fingerlugs 14E. For the purpose of cheapness of manufacture and lightness of construction the parts are preferably stamped from sheet metal, but may be otherwise formed if desired.
In the use of this form of my invention to look a sash in any desired position relative to its casing, the block or body 1 is placed in a casing-groove 3 at one side of such sash with the outer end of its bolt member 7 disposed toward the sash. The cam 9 is then turned and cooperates with the lug 13 to relatively move the block and bolt, whereby the end 12 of the bolt has its thrust against the contiguous side of the sash to be locked and the legs 2 of the block bite at their outer ends into the inner edge of the outer casing strip 4 to oppose the thrust of the bolt on the sash.
It is apparent that the lock not only rigidly secures the sash with which its bolt is in engagement against movement, but may be positioned in a groove 3 so as to serve as a stop to prevent an opening of the other sash beyond a predetermined point. It is also apparent that the lock can be easily and quickly applied or removed from engagement with a sash and casing, does not mar the sash or casing, and is especially applicable for use by traveling men or the like as it can be easily carried around and used in different styles and sizes of windows.
The form shown in Fig. 3 is similar in the manner of its application to that shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and comprises the body 26 which is intended to seat within a casinggroove, and the sash engaging member 27, which is shown as constituting a screw having a head or disk 28 swiveled to its end for abutting against the sash. This screw is threaded through a boss 29 on the body 26. The operation of this construction of my invention is apparent.
I wish it understood that my invention is not limited to any specific construction or arrangement of the parts except in so far as such limitations are specified in the claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,
1. A sash-lock, comprising a body U-shape in cross-section adapted to fit loosely within a casing-groove with the outer ends of its legs abutting the outer Wall of such groove, a sash coacting member, and means carried by said body and operative to force said member against the sash and to cause said outer leg ends to bite into the wall of said groove.
2-. A sash-lock, comprising a U-shaped casing-block adapted to fit freely within a sashgroove with its legs transversely thereof and adapted to bite at their outer ends into a wall of the sash-groove, a boss carried by the loop portion of such block, a bolt-member threaded through said boss transversely of the sash-groove and adapted to abut at one end against an associated sash.
3. A sash-lock, comprising a body adapted to fit within a sash-groove, and a bolt member threaded through a part of said body and adapted to abut at one end against an associated sash.
