Letters Patent No. 95,434, dated October 5, 1869.
IMPROVED RAILWAY-CR. COUJPLING.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part o the same.
This invention relates to a new and useful improvev ment in couplings for uniting railroad-cars together; and
lt consists ina device for holding the coupling-link' in a horizontal position when the cars are being coupled, and in the method of inserting the coupling-pin, as will be yhereinafter more fully described.
' vThe accompanying drawing represents a vertical longitudinal section of one-half of the coupling, (the parts of the coupling being duplicates of each other, only one-half is'shown.) lhe section is through the Figure 2 is a frontend View.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the draw-head.
B is the coupling-link. v
C is the coupling-pin.
In the mouth D, of the draw-head, there is a spring, E, which bears'down on to the lower and back portion of the mouth, as seen in the drawing.
The back end of the link isv pressed down by this spring, so that itis held ina horizontal position, as represented in the drawing, when the cars come together. y
N It will be seen that the link is in the proper position for entering the mouth of the opposite draw-head, thus rendering it entirely unnecessary to support the .cess of coupling the cars is unattended with any danver. D Thecoupling-pin C is, at the same time, held in a vertical position, as seen in the drawing, by means' of the spiing-slidehhh This slide has a shank, g, upon which there is a.- spiral spring, la l The shank passesfentirely through the draw-head, witha nut, t', onv its o'nter end.' vThe spring bears against a shoulder, at j, and against the end of the slide, at k,whil the forward movement of the slide is limited by the nut t'.
As seen 'inthe drawing, the pin C is supported,'or `prevented from dropping, by the position of the slide. When the drawheads ofthe opposing cars come in contact with each other, the slide F will be pushed in, which will allow the pin to drop through the link, when the coupling` ofthe cars will be complete.
By this arrangement, it will be seen that the cars are coupled automaticallythus avoiding the necessity of going between the cars and endangering life and limb thereby in coupling Having thus described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Leut-v ters Patent, is-
As an improvement upon car-couplings, the recessedv draw-head A and spring E, in' combination with the spring-slide F, all operating together to drop the pin .and retain vthe link in a horizontal position, in the manner shown and described.
The above specification of my invention signed by Ine, this 17th day of May, 1869. WILLIAM OOTTRELL.
