Be it known that I, FRANK. P. LASLO, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at llooversville, in the county ot Somerset and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful. improvements in Protectors and Shields for Caps, of which the following is a specification, re't'erence being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to protectors and shields for caps, particularly those worn by miners and provided with lamps.

The prin'iary object of my invention is to provide a novel protector and shield for prc venting the flame of a miners lamp from injuring or setting tire to the .21 p supporting the lamp.

Another object of the invention is to provide a protector and shield that can be easily secured to the crown of a cap for preventing the crown from becoming saturated or disfigured by oil, which liable to catch tire from the flame ot' the miners lamp or torch.

It is a well known fact that the crown of a miners cap often receives drops of oil from the overhead machinery within a mine and from placing the cap where it is liable to receive oil, which in a short time causes the cap to become practically saturated. The life of the miner wearing such a cap is endangered when walking or working in a draft, since the flame ot the miners lamp or torch is liable to be blown or deflected against the cap and set tire to the same. Such accidents have often occurred and it is in view of these accidents that I have devised a protector and shield that not only fully protects the cap, but supports the miners lamp.

My invention will be hereinafter considered in detail and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawing forn'iing a part of this specification, wherein there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that the structural elements thereof can be varied or changed without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.

In the drawing :Figure 1 is a side elevation of a miners cap provided with the protector and shield, Fig. 2 is a plan of the same, Fig. 3 is a front elevation, and Fig. l is an enlarged vertical sectional view.

In the accompanying drawing I have illustrated a miners cap as comprising a crown portion 1 and a vizor 2. Adapted to be suitably connected to the crown l by a pltu'ality o't' rivets 3 or other "fastening means is a metallic plate -t adapted to completely cover the crown of the cap. This plate -l has the front edge thereof provided with a central extension 5 which is bent dowmvardly to provide a lamp support. The edges of the plate -1t at; the sides of the extension 5 are also bent downwardly, as att' to provide shields upon each side Off the lamp support. In bending the extension 5 to term a lamp support, the forward edge o't the extension 5 is rolled, as at 7 and provided with a vertical slot 3, the object of which will presently appear.

To add rigidity to the lamp support, an additional piece ot material is used, comprising a curved plate 5) having a horizontal. portion 10 adapted to be riveted or otherwise connected, as at 11 to the forward edge of the plate -l. This curved plate is bent upon itself, as at 12 with the end thereof bent out- 'ardly, as at 13 to overlap the depending portion 1-,tof the plate 4. The side edges ol the plate 9 are flanged, as at 15 and 16, the flanges 15 overlapping the bent portion '12 of the plate 9 and the depending portion ll of the plate =1, while the tlanges to overlap and engage the side edges ot the extension 5 Inserted between the end of the curved plate 9 and the body thereof is a resilient clasp 17 adapted to embrace a miners lamp 18, said lamp having the lower edge thereof resting upon that portion ot' the curved plate 9 which is bent upon itself. A rivet 1S is preferably used for connecting the clasp 17 to the plate 5), and the same rivet is adapted to connect; the brace 1.) to the plate i), said brace having the ends thereof secured to the depending portions 6 of the plate l, as at 20.

The hook 21 generally carried by a miners lamp is adapted to extend upwardly through the slot 8 and downwardly in openings 22 provided therefor in the extension 5, and the horizontal portion 10 of the curved plate 9.

The depending portions (3 of the plate t are adapted to prevent the flame of the lamp 18 from contacting with the crown of the cap, and since the lamp can be easily removed, it is believed that the protector and shield can be advantageously used by miners and qnarrymen without materially increasing the weight of the cap.

Having now described my invention what I claim as new, is

l. The combination with a miners cap, of a protector and shield adapted to be connected thereto, said protector and shield comprising a plate adapted to be secured to the crown of the cap, said plate having the forward edge thereof provided with a central extension and the edges of said plate at the sides of the extension bent downwardly to provide shields, and a reinforced lamp support carried by said extension and adapted to be connected to said shields for supporting a miners lamp.

2. The combination with a miners cap, of a protector and shield adapted to be secured thereto, said protector and shield comprising a plate, a central extension carried by said plate, said plate having the edges thereof at the sides of said extension bent downwardly to provide shields, a curved plate connected to said extension and adapted to provide a lamp support, a resilient clasp connected to said curved plate and adapted to support a miners lamp, a brace connecting said curved plate to said shields, and said extension and said curved plate having openings formed therein adapted to receive the hook of a miners lamp, substantially as described.

3. The combination with a miners cap and a lamp adapted to be supported thereby, of a plate adapted to be connected to said cap, a central extension carried by said plate, said plate having the edges thereof at the sides of said extension bent downwardly to provide shields, a curved plate connected to said extension, a resilient clasp carried by said curved plate and adapted to embrace said lamp, said extension and said curved plate having an opening formed therein adapted to receive the hook of said lamp, and means adapted to brace said curved plate relative to said shields.
