Description

F. SCHERB.
Wagon Spring..
Patented Sept. 28, 1869.
FRANCIS SCHERB, or SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
Letters Patent No. 95,385, dated September 28, 1869.
IMPROVED SPRING-WAGON.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Fnanors Sounnn, of the city and county of San Francisco, State of Oalifornia, have invented-an Improved Carriage or Spring-YVagon; and
I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawings are sufficient to enable any person skilled in theart or science to which it most nearly appertains, to make and use my said invention or improvements without further invention or experiment.
The nature of my invention is the construction of an improved carriage or springqvagonyiu which a thoroughbrace is used, ii combination with a curved wooden jack, to form the spring; and
It consists in arranging the wooden jacks or springs in such a manner as to be out of the way of the wheels when attempting to turn the wagon; secondly, in an improved 0 ip, for securing the jacks to the head-block and axle-bed.
It also consists in an improved device for securing the ends of the thoroughbraces, so that they can be taken up when they become loose orQslack.
The object to be gained is convenience and utility. It also gives a carriage or wagon a better finish of the more noticeable parts, while it gives strength to those parts liable to be the weakest.
In order to give a more full description of my manner of constructing carriages and wagons, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, and the letters marked thereon, forming a part of this specification,
of which- Figure l is a perspective view.
Figure 2 is a view of the jack.
Figures 3 to 9, inclusive, are details.
Similar letters of reference, in each of the figures, indicate like parts.
A is the head-block, and B the rear axle-bed of a wagon, and are joined together by the reaches 0 0.
These reaches approach each other as they hear the head-block, and diverge toward the axle-bed B,
plate, a, which, on one side, extends a distance from the clip, as shown in figs. 8 and 9, and is provided with a hole, through which a bolt, '5, (shown in figs. 5
and 7,) passes. I I
This clip is used to secure the bent jacks D to the head-block, the plates 0 resting on the top of the jack, and the clips passing down on each side of the axlebed and head-block, where it is secured, as above described, by the bolt 1', thus rendering it perfectly solid. The leather thoroughbraces G G are fastened through the head-block A and through the axle-bed B, by means of a split iron strap-bolt, H, shown in figs. 6 and 7, and are screwed into the metal shoulders I, and secured with nuts, by means of which the thoroughbraces can be taken up or shortened when they become slack.
- At the upper ends of the jacks are staples K, shown at figs. 3 and .4. The thoroughbraces pass through these staples, and are thus prevented from slipping from the jacks.
The staples are confined. to the jacks by means of metal straps c, which pass around under the jacks, and thus hold them firm; and maybe either continuous from one side to the other, as shown at fig. 4, ormay simply be two arms, bent under and meeting in the centre, as in fig. 3. 7
By thus constructing a carriage or wagon, much greater strength is obtained, and the bent jacks are not liable to settle, being arranged independent of the reaches, 'while,by the use of the solid clips, they are secured to the head-block and rear axle-bed so firmly that they cannot give from their proper position; and the mode of securing the thoroughbraccs is such that their tension can be easily changed.
Havingthus described my invention,
vWhat I claim, and cut, is
LThe reaches 0 bars E E and bent wooden jacks D, the whole arranged substantially as herein described. 7
2. The combination of the split strap-bolt H and shoulder I, for securing the ends and regulating the tension of the thoroughbraces, substantially as described.
In wituess'whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
