.a citizen of the United States, residing rin Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State o New Jersey, have invented certain new and usetul Improvements in TypeJWriting Machines, of which the following` is a specilication.
rl`his invention relaties to typewriting and tabulating machines, and particularly to means for braking or controlling the speed of the carriage when the .same is released from its letter spacing mechanism. V
` ln' a. c-pending application No. 403,891, tiled November 26, 1907, is illustrated one forni ot revolving brake which is operated l by a pinion, the latter being caused by the carriage-release key to mesh with a gear provided upoithe spring barrel which propels the carriage.

Said yielding connection is preferably in the form of a spring, which acts iininediately upon t-he release of the carriage to force the pinion into proper mesh with the .gear on the carriagespring barrel.

To prevent too rapid movement of the carriage, I provide a sec'- ond arm 21 upon the rock shaft- 5, and depend therefrom a link 22, whose-lower end is pivoted to an arm extending forwardly from a rock shaft 24, thelatter carrying a frame or barrel 25 containing a revolving brake mechanism. This connectioncomprises a leaf-spring or yielding finger 28 secured by a screw 29 uponja hub 30* of the barrel 25; At its other end, the spring is bent inwardly at a right angle to a finger 31. The hub 30 is recessed at 32 to admit the finger, and the rock shaft 24 is formed with a cutaway 33 which is engaged by the ,springlfingerl 31,' whereby displacement of the brake barrel 25l along the shaft 24 is prevented.
