Description

i v daiirri @States @met Gettin.
R. e. HUGUNIN, or CLEVELAND, OHIO.
Letters Patent No. 95,350, dated September 28, 1869.
Mao-.
vIMPRovIsn sAsn-Holman.
The Schedule referred to in these'Letters Patent and making part of the same.
- Be it known that I, R. B. HUGUNI, of Cleveland, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Arrangement of Rollers and Springs for .Description of 'Accmnpanyng Drawings.
Figure l is a side elevation of plate, with compressed rollers and springs, embracing the features of in y invention.
General Description.
A isthe lower half lof the plate used for compressing, confining, andsupporting Athe rollers.
B is the upper half of plate A.
rlhis plate A B is made in halves, to facilitate casting, with journal-rests, Sto.
C C are journal-rests in plate A, forlarge and small rollers.
D and D', elastic rollers.
E and E', 86o., journals of elastic rollers.
F, small roller, permanently compressed into the elastic rollers, and then forced down to its natural position, (the rests C and C,) and secured there by the plate A B.
It will be observed, this permanent compressiomof the small roller into the large ones compels them all-` to move uniformly together, and 'gives to them a positive and uniform supporting-power, independently of anyr outside friction or pressure.
G and G are common wood-screws, used to secure the plate A B to the sash.
H and H', springs, usedv under the ends of the plate A B, and compressed between 'the plate and sash by the screws G and G.
I is thewindow-sash. K
In operation, therollers D, D', and F, are put into their proper position in plate A by compression, and the plate B placed overthem and secured.
The mortise having been made in the edge of the sash, to receive the plate A B, 85o., and the pieces of rubber or springs H and H' having been laid in their proper places, the plate A B and the confine-d rollers are placed into position, and securedby the screws G and G.
One of these"suppo1ters. is put in on each side' of the sash. 'v
The sash is put into the window by placing one edgeagainst the casing; and with a chisel, or other flat tool, compressing the rollers, and forcing in the other. edge, &c. V If there be but little room between the sash and casing, the yieldin'gof the springs H and H' and elastic rollers D and D' will readily allow the sash to enter.
When the sash shrinks Aaway from the casing, the
compressed springs Hand H willforce the plate outl Ward enough to take up this shrinkage.
'The arrangement of the compressed rollers D and D' and F may he continued in number so as to embrace several of each, or only one of each, in one plate, as desired or required.
The vplate A B can also be cast in one piece, if desired, and the holes for the journals drilled init. The compression or adjusting of the rollers, however, would not be so convenient this way. V
Small bent metal clasps may be used to lhold the plates A and B together till put into the sash.
l do not claimthe use of elastic or non-elastic rollj ers, nor the combination of the `two yfor such supporters, unless the two be compressed and held permancntly together, as their natural and regular working positions, as herein shown, and independent, in their supporting-power, of any outside weight, excepting contact, to hold on by.-
The invention of any Wedging arrangement of rollers, or clamping ot' rollers, by pressure from the casing, or friction from weight of sash;7 or vertically or lhorizontally-moving bearings and clamp, I distinctly disclaim.
The compressed rollers, moving uniformly together with immovable bearings, comprise my invention in that direction, as herein show n.
' Claim.
I claim the arrangement of the elasticroller D and tially as described herein.
R. B. HUGUNIN.'
