Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DITUS P. HEWITT, citizen of the United States, residing at Rockdale, in the county of Milam and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Breast-Straps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to breast straps and particularly to the attachments therefor.
The object of the invention is to provide snap hook connections for the strap arranged to reduce the wear on the strap to a minimum and prolong the life of the strap.
Another feature is the arrangement of the hame snap hooks whereby they may be removed when the strap wears out and readily attached to a new strap.
A further object is the provision of spaced rollers in the yoke snap hook whereby friction is reduced and a sharp bending of the strap obviated thus preventing the breaking of the fiber of strap.
Finally the object of the invention is to provide means of the character described that will be strong, durable, efficient, and easy of operation, simple and comparatively inexpensive to construct, and also in which the several parts will not be likely to get out of working order.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention has relation to certain novel features of construction and operation, an example of which is described in this specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a plan View of the strap and snap hooks, Fig. 2 is an elevation of the same, Fig. 3 is a section on the line QP-a of Fig. 1, Fig. 4 is a vertical section on the line mw of Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is a horizontal section of one of the hame snap hooks.
In the drawing the numeral 1, designates the breast strap which is preferably formed of webbing or belting. At each end the strap is attached to a hame snap hook 2. The manner of attaching each book consists of two metal plates 3, one placed on each side of the strap and having their ends ter- {minating in ears at projecting beyond the 1 end of the strap. Each hook is provided with an annular flat shank 5 set at right angles thereto and pivoted between the bosses by a pin 6. In this way the hooks are free to swing laterally with the hooks directed inward.
I wish to call particular attention to the means of attaching the plates 3 to the strap. If these plates were secured by means of rivets, it would be necessary to cut off the rivets when the strap wore out and it was desired to place the plates on a new strap. To obviate this and permit the change to be quickly and conveniently made, screw-headed bolts 7 are passed through the plates and the strap and nuts 8 threaded on the ends of the bolts as shown in Figs. 2 and 4:. I employ three bolts to each snap hook 2 and the nuts and bolts are readily removed when desired.
A yoke snap hook is pivoted on a pin 10 between the rounded ends of plates 11. These plates are each bent outward at 12. These portions 12 are rigidly connected by pins 13. These pins are spaced apart and on each pin a roller 14 is mounted. The breast strap 1 is passed about the rollers between the plates so that the snap is sup ported by the engagement of the rollers on the strap. By spacing the rollers apart, the strap is caused to bend in the arc of a comparatively large circle and therefore a sharp or sudden bending is obviated. As the animal wearing the breast strap moves the strap will work over the rollers freely and the hooks 2 and 9 owing to their. pivoted connections will permit the strap to readily adjust itself and relieve twisting as well as adding to the comfort of the animal wearing the breast strap.
