EDWIN CARTER, 0F NORWALK, CONNECTICUT;
Letters Patent No. 95,322, dated September-28,1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN FASTENING-S FOR ATTAC HING- THE ENDS OP BANDS, CLAMPS,-&c.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the lame.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN CARTER, of the town pf Norwalk, county of Fairfield, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Article for Fastening and Attaching Handles to Pots, Kettles, and other Articles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description tl1ereof,reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the arrangement and construction of iasteuings in a peculiar manner, either in whole or separate parts, combining a coupling for the band, and a fastening for the handle.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the same.
The Drawing. I
Figure Us a view of the handle, coupling, and band,
Figure 2is a plan and part sectional view oi'the same.
Figure 3 represents the coupling when used for at-'- taching the ends of a band, or other article.
Figure 4, a plan View of the same.
AA are the two separate portions of the slotted counecting-platesorloop-pieces, which I make of any required size, to suit and correspond to the width of i In each of the plates A, I make two or more openings or slots, 0, one of each to receive the studs D D, the other for the band B to pass through and bend round a middle cross-piece of the openings, so that the end can be returned a short distance backward, in similar or other article that is being banded, and will hold perfectly tight when the studs D D are drawn together by the action of the screw E.
The studs D D project outward suificient to receive a hole for the screw E to-pass through, and which also passes through the'euds of the handle. F, to support the same, and'allow it to work freely.
At the bottom or inner ends of the studs D, there is a return piece to form a square hook, H, which is inserted through the slot 0, and presses on the inner side of the plate A, and when the studs D are drawn together by the action of the screw E, and the bandB is tightened, the square piece or hook H will hold the whole firmly. g
The figs. 3 and 4 represent the coupling and other attachments, when theyare employed to draw together the band B, when used for a kettle, or any other cylindrical article, to draw, tighten, or connect the'ends of a band or belt, 62c.
The couplin can be used as shown in the drawing,
figs. 3 and 4, by riveting the band B to the slotted conmeeting-loop pieces or plates A A, or may be used by returning the band B around the middle cross-piece, the
same as shown in figs. 1 and 2, the tightening-screw E occupying the place of the handle F, and can he used with or without the handle.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure Witnesses: I
WrrxVmn, Josnrn F, Foorn.
