Be it known that I, WALTER F. THOMP- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Plattsburg, in the county of Clinton, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Initial- Handles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in identification marks for umbrella handles, grips, whips and the like.

It has for its object the provision of an improved form of handle to which may be applied in an easy manner the marks of the owner, said marks being either his initials, full name or equivalent marks of identification.

Another object is the provision of an improved form of character which is adapted to be applied to the handle in an easy manner, and when so applied will be prevented from accidental loss or displacement.

A. further object is the provision of a construction which can be applied to most forms of umbrella handles and the like now in use.

With these and other objects in view as will more fully hereinafter appear, the present invention consists in certain novel details of construction and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and more particularly pointed out in the appended claim. It being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of the device may be made within the scope of the appended claim without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

In the accompanying drawings forming part of the specification :Figure 1 is a side elevation of the handle portion of an umbrella constructed in accordance with my invention and showing the characters applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of one of the characters. Fig. 1 is an end elevation of one of the characters. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary view of a grip showing the handle of the same equipped with my construction.

Similar numerals of reference are employed to designate corresponding parts throughout.

It is to be understood, as before stated, that this construction may be applied to most forms of canes, whips, grip handles and umbrella handles now in use; for purposes of illustration I have shown it applied to the handle of an ordinary umbrella and the handle of a grip 0r suit case. 7

In the construction illustrated in Fig. l the stick portion of the umbrella is desig nated by the numeral 5 and is shown provided at one end with a handle section 6. As is usual with most devices of this kind the handle section is relatively larger than the stick section and terminates at one end with the usual knob 7. Extending from that end of the handle portion 6, adjacent the stick section 5 to a point adjacent the opposite end or knob 7 a longitudinal recess 8 is, formed the floor of which is fiat. This recess may be of any suitable depth and the side walls 9 and 10 are perpendicular to the flat floor, as shown. The opposite longitudinal sides of the fiat floor are provided with longitudinal grooves 11 and 12, these grooves are the same length as the recess and by this formation the inner ends of the side walls 9 and 10 of the recess lie below the plane of the flat floor of the latter. Formed integral therewith or otherwise secured to the upper edges of the side walls 9 and 10 are overhanging guide members 13 and 14:. These members extend into the recess 8 and are substantially the same in length as the latter and have their inner sides spaced from the flat floor thereof. The inner sides of the guide members 13 and 14L are provided with longitudinal grooves 15 and 16 which are in a plane with the grooves 11 and 12 and like the latter extend the entire length of the recess 8. The guides 13 and 14: extend but a short way' into the recess 8 so that a considerable space exists between their opposed sides.

From the foregoing it can be seen that owing to the grooves 11-12-15 and 16 that a substantially I shaped opening is formed, the grooves forming sockets for the characters about to be described, and the opening between the guides providing as a space through which the said characters may be seen.

By referring now to Fig. 1 it will be seen that a plurality of characters, designated in general by the numeral 17 are disposed within the recess 8. It may here be stated that these characters may be formed of a plate or they may be placed within the re cess separate or spaced apart by suitable space marks, or blanks. When each character is separated as shown in Fig. 3 its opposite terminals will be provided with studs 18 of a length sufficient to enter the guide openings formed by the over-hanging portions 18 and 14, the studs terminate in cross pieces 19, the entire stud being substantially T shape in contour and of a size to snugly fit within the corresponding formation on the opposite sides of the recess 8 as before described.

Thus it will be seen that I have provided a device which can be readily applied to most forms of handles for umbrellas grips, canes and the like. The characters may be held within the recess in any suitable manner such as by tamping down the outer ends of the guides or sealing the same with solder and the like.

In the modified form shown in Fig. 5 the suit case handle 20 is provided with a recess 21 and guides similar to the formations shown in Fig. 2, the characters 23 being insertible into the recess and secured in a manner heretofore described.

Having thus described my invention, what is claimed as new, is

The combination of a handle member provided on one side with a longitudinal groove, the side walls of which are provided at their bases with inwardly extending slots forming lateral extensions of said groove, the said slots tern'linating in recesses of corresponding lengths but of greater widths than the said slots and arranged perpendicular to the latter and a character member insertible into said groove and provided at its terminal with T shaped studs insertible into said slots and recesses.
