STOCK-BREEDING BOX.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, OLIVER C. BLACK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stock-Breeding Boxes; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in stock-breeding boxes of the kind utilized for breeding horses.

The object of the invention is to provide a breeding box which may be adjusted to properly inclose the mare or animal and to thus prevent any injury to said animal.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1, is a top plan view of my improved adjustable breeding box. Fig. 2, is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3, is an end elevation.

In a detailed description of the invention, similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts.

1 and 2 designate the side walls of the breeding box which are united to posts 3 and 4 respectively. The side wall 1 is stationary and the posts 3 extend a suflicient distance into the ground to provide firm upright supports for said wall. The side wall 2 is movable or adjustable and the posts 1 thereof are hinged at 5 to stationary posts 6 which are also firmly anchored in the ground. The movable side wall 2 is adjustable as before stated and may be locked in any position by notched levers 9 which are pivoted to the posts 4 and engage pins 10 in the posts 6, said notched levers 9 passing through suitable openings in the posts 6, and the pins 10 extending across said openings.

The side walls 1 and 2 are provided with foot boards 11 which are hinged at 11 and the inner edges of which are adapted to engage the side of the animal when the latter is in the box. The forward ends of the foot boards are supported upon chains 12,

while the rear ends of said foot boards rest upon a bar 13 which passes through openings in the posts 3 and (S and through an opening in one of the posts 4. The bar 13 engages the animal at the rear and prevents her from backing out of the box. The foot boards 11 when in posit-ion, are prevented from being forced upward by braces 14, one end of each of which is pivoted to the side walls 1 and 2, and the other end of each of which is pointed and engages said foot boards. The posts 3 and 4c are provided at their top with rails 7 and 8 upon which are mounted yokes 16.

Resting upon the rails 7 and 8, is a board 15 which is adapted to engage the breast of the animal. The said board 1.5 is adjustable and is held by pins 16 which pass through it and through the yokes 16. The board 15 may be termed a breast board and is provided with rings 17 through which a rope may be placed to pass over the neck of the animal,

lVhen the apparatus is to be placed in an operative position, the side wall 2 is thrown outward, the foot boards 11 are thrown upward, the bar 13 is removed and the breast board 15 is placed in an outer position. The animal is then placed in the box, and the bar 13 is placed in position, the foot boards 11 are lowered and fastened by the braces 1-1, and the side is moved inwardly until the foot boards 11 engage the side of the animal where they are held by the notched levers 9. The br-ast board 15 is then placed in position and held by the pins 16. in thus moving the adjustable side wall 2 to a proper position, the space on the side of the mare is reduced to a minimum and the stallion will be prevented from getting upon the side of the mare within the box and thus endangering the latter animal. The adjustable side of the breeding box is important in thus safe-guarding the mare within the box from any possible danger.
