To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Mannion E. FARRIs, a citizen of the United States ot America, residing at Big Stone Gap, in the county of rise and State of Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Penholders, of which the following is a speciication.
My invention relates to penholders of that type comprising a stem, a nib receiving sleeve secured to the stem, a member located within and extending longitudinally of the sleeve to secure a nib in applied position, and a knob secured to the member and passing through the sleeve to provide means b v which the member may be moved into and held in nib releasing position.
One object of my invention is the provision of a penholde'r of the above stated character wherein the knob is formed by transversely bending the nib securing meniber at a point intermediate its ends, whereby to permit the knob and member to be constructed by a single stamping operation.
IVith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure l is a sectional view of a penholder constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the vertical plane indicated by the line 2 2 of Fig. l, and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the nib securing member.
Referring to the drawing by reference numerals, l designa-tes the stock, 2 the nib carrying sleeve, 3 the nib, and 4 the nib securing member of my improved penholder.
The nib securing member t comprises an elongated body 5 which is curved in cross section to conform to the curvature of the inner side of the nib 3. A reduced stem 6 is formed integrally with and extends longitudinally from one end of Vthe body 5. At its free end the stem 6 is bent upwardly to provide an attaching element 7 which is located between the stock 1 and the sleeve 2. The securing member is disposed longitudinally of the sleeve 2, and is secured in applied position by a rivet 9 which passes through the sleeve and through the attach- Specification of Letters Patent.

That portion of the stem (i located between the attaching element 7 and the knob l0, provides a spring portion S which yieldingly retains the body 5 in nib securing position, the nib being clamped between the body and the inner side of the sleeve 2 by the action of the spring portion. The wall ot' the opening ll is bent inwardly to provide an annular flange 12 which forms a stop adapted to limit the insertion of the nib 3 into the sleeve 2.
IVhen it is desired to apply a nib to the sleeve 2, the body 5 is moved into and held in inactive position by the knob l0. After the nib has been inserted into the sleeve the body 5 is released whereupon the spring portion 8 will move it into and hold it in nib clamping position. then it is desired to remove the nib 3 from the sleeve 2, the body 5 is moved into and held in nib releasing position by the knob 10.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it should be apparent that the nib securing member may be constructed in a single stamping operation, that it is simple, durable and eliicient otl construction, and that it is admirably adapted for the purposes for which it is intended.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new, is
A penholder comprising a stock, a sleeve secured to the stock and having an opening, the wall of the opening being bent downwardly to provide a nib stop, and a nib securing member located within and disposed longitudinally of the sleeve, said member being provided with a knob extending through the opening in the sleeve.
