1 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MILTON J. SHIMER,'OF BETHLEHEM, PENNSYLVANIA.
TOY PISTOL.
. Application fi1ed'Septemher 10,'1909. Serial No. 512,019,
To all whom it may concern: i I
Be it known that I, MILTON J. SHIMnn,
a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Bethlehem, in the county of Northampton and State of Pennsylvania, have invented anew and Improved Toy Pistol, of which the following is a full, clear,
and. exact description. 4
- The invention 1s an improvement in autoniatic toy pistols inwhich the caps in the form of a tape are fed under the hammer in successive order at each pull of the trig.-
er and'has in view in such a construction means to retain the hammer and cap-feeding finger in retracted positions to enable the ready insertion of the cap tape over the feeding plate and anvil when the .tape is renewed. Further, to provide a cap chamber cover mounted to swing edgewise to and from a closed'posit-ion and having a slight lateral movement to lock and unlock it on its seat, also, to returnthe hammer and cap-feeding finger when released and press .thefinger to the feed plate by means ofa single spring. v
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this'speci ficat-ion, in, which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views. a
Figure 1 i's'a side View of a'pistol constructed in accordance with my invention;
Fig. 4 is an inner face view of the cap cham-' ber. cover. 7 1
The pistol to whichjmy improvements are applied is preferably made of two longitudinal half sect-ions 5, 5, removably or otherwise secured together by screws or other equivalent devices 6, 6, asis the con ventional ractice. A; feed plate 7 is cast or otherwise rigidly formed on one of the half sections of the pistol and is continuous with a cap anvil 8, the lower portion of the feed plate terminating a substantial distance from the bottom of the casing anddividing the intermediate portion of the pistol into a cap chamber 9 and a hammer and feed chamber 10, the cap chamber having a projecting stud or pin 11 for carrying a continuous length or tape of caps 12, the free Tend of the tapebeingpassed over the inner extending arm .13 to which is fulcrumed a engaging a rib .or pro ection 15 on'the under edge of a hammer 16, The hammer is further provided with a'rib or projection 17 to the rear and slightly below; the projection 15.
Pivotally supported on the lower portion of the dog 14 to the rear of its connection with the trigger is a cap feed finger 18, the feed finger and hammer being both forced toward the feed plate and anvil res ectively, by a spring 19. This spring is o hairpin form, with the'upper rear portion engaging over a fixedpin or' projection '20, and the end portions respectively engaging in a notch 21 in the back of the hammer, and over a pin or projection 22 extending from one side of the finger 18. I
by a cover 23, preferably of'the form shown in Fig.1, and providedwith an extended ear 24 at its outer upper corner; as best shownin Fig. 4;. .This. car is inset slightly from the cover and is arranged on the inner side .of'an car 25, projecting; from a fixed part of this section of the pistol, to which the cover is pivotally connected by a stud or pin 26, the same carrying a spring .27 tend-v ing to press the cover flat toritsseat. The opening in-the car 24 of the cover, receiving'the pin 26, is sufliciently large to permit the free edge of the cover to be moved outwardly from the side of the pistolagainst the tension of the spring 27 in order that a projection 28 formed on the inner face of 'the cover may be disengaged from the pivot pin, 29 of thetrigger, these devices engaging, as indicated'in dotted lines in Fig. 1, and locking the cover in place. a
In pulling the trigger of the pistol, the dog 14 retracts the hammer against the tensionof the spring until the point of the dog passes over the projection- 15, when the of'the trigger, the upward movement of the dog carries with it the ca feed finger 18,
trigger is released, it, together with the hammer-operating dog and cap feed finger, 1s returned to normal position under the sections of the pistol and has arearwardly One side of the cap chamber 9 is closed hammer-operating dog l4,the dog normally hammer is released and forced to the anvil, where the cap is fired. During the pulling which slides the cap tape over the feed plate to place the top cap on the anvil. When the 40 u engaged with the feed finger, forcing it action of that arm of the sprineg1 which the finger, dog and trigger to normal posir forces the feed finger to the fe plate. tion.
During this movement of the finger the'cap' 3. In a cap pisto1, a hammer having a thedpoint of the dog 14, w
ta e is stationarily held by the hammer.
1611 renewing or removing the cap tape the hammer is retracted with the finger of the hand until the pro'ection 17 engages en the hammer is hel in cocked sosition. The cap feed finger is also retraete by pushing it to the u per portion of the dog 14, where it is held by the friction of the sprin on the pin or projection 22. With the ammer and finger thus dis sed, a clear space over the inner face of t e feed plate and anvil is provided enabling the ready removal or insertion of the tape.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a cap pistol, a feed plate, a hammer a trigger a dog pivoted to the trigger and operatlvely engaging the hammer, a capfeed-finger pivoted to the dog at a point to cause the dog to tend to swmg outwardly from the plate against the hammer when the cap-feed-finger is pressed to the plate, and a s ring pressing the cap-feed-finger to the Y-p ate.,
2. In a cap pistol, a feed plate, a pivotally-supported trigger having a rearwardlyprojecting arm, ananvil, a hammer having a dog fulcrumedto the arm of the trigger and adapted to engage the said projection and cook and release the hammer under'the action of the trigger, a cap feed finger fulerumed on the dog, and a spring having two arms, one of which is engaged with the'hammer, tending to force it to the anvil, and the other against the feed plate and tending to return sw ng t projection, a trig r, a dog fulorumedpn'the tri ger, arrang to engage the pro ection an retract the hammer under the actlon of the trigger, a cap'feed finger fulcrumed on the dog, a s ringtending to force the trigger, do and fin or to normal POSltiOIllLlld lie finger orwardly and downwardly on its pivot, said spring arranged to retain the finger in a retracted position when the finger is moved toward the dog, and a second projection in connection with the hammer, adapted to en a the dog and retain the hammer in me e?! position.
4, In a pistol havin a cap chamber, a cover to close the side 0 the chamber, pivotally su ported to swing edgewise 'to and from c osed position and having a slight lateral movement, a spring arranged to press the cover laterally to its seat, and means to lock the cover in place, engaged and disengaged by the lateral movement of the cover.
5. In a pistol having a casing provlded with a cap chamber, a to close the side of the c amber, having an ear extended from one corner, passin under the casingand loosely en aged wit the pivot pin, a spring arrange on the plvot pin, pressing the ear of the cover outwardly, a projection carried by the casin and a projection on the inner face of t e cover adapted to engage the first-named projectlon and lock the cover in place.
In testimony whereof I'have signed my name to' this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. t
