WILLIAM BENNETT, OF CHESTERTON, INDIANA.
IRONINGr-STAND.
Specicaton of Letters Patent.'
Patented Mar. 15,1910.
Application filed June 5, 1909. Serial No. 500,362.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM BENNETT, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chesterton, in the county of Porter and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in vIroning-Stands, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to ironing stands, and one of the principal objects of the same is to provide a stand comprising a cabinet having a door for closing the same, said cabinet being provided with shelves for receiving various articles for use in the ironing operation and a pair of hinged ironing board members connected to the upper part of the stand for rendering the same available as an ironing board, means being provided for supporting the ironing boardmembers when thrown up into position for use.
Another object of the invention is to provide a hollow stand or cabinet having hinged ironing board members connected thereto and supports for said members, said supports being hinged to the stand and eX- tensible for holding the ironing board members in horizontal position, means being provided for supporting the finished work or garments ironed.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a stand or cabinet having an enlarged base mounted on casters for moving` the stand or cabinet from place to place, said stand comprising a hollow or rectangular cabinet having a hinged door and shelves therein for supporting various articles. Supporting devices or braces are hinged to the stand and provided with extensible me1nbers for supporting hinged ironing board connections and pivoted brackets for supporting the ironed articles.
These and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a front elevation of an ironing stand made in accordance with my invention, the parts being arranged in position for ironing. F ig. 2 is a vertical section of the same, one of the ironing board members being shown in turn-down position in dotted lines. FigQ is a side elevation of the iron'- ing board stand, showing the brackets for supporting the ironed articles in position for use, and showing in dotted lines the position to which said brackets may be swung when not in use. Fig. 4 isa horizontal sectional view of the same. Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view taken through the box or sleeve for securing the two members of the supporting device or brace in adjusted position.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the base of the stand mounted on casters 2. Connected centrally to the base is a cabinet, preferably of rectangular form and comprising a back 3, sides 4 and a hinged door 5 connected to one of the sides 4 by means of hinges 6 and provided with a knob or handle 7 for opening and closing the door. Shelves 8 are supported upon the inside of the cabinet by means of cleats 9 secured to the inner walls of the sides 4. The upper end of the cabinet is iared outwardly, as at 10, and the hinged top 11 forms the central portion of the ironing board. Connected to the opposite sides of the flaring portion 10 are the ironing board members 13, said ironing board members forming drop leaves hinged at 14 to the flaring portion 10, said members 13 being adapted to form continua-tions of the central top portion 11.
To support the members 13 in horizontal position braces 15 are connected to the lower portion of the cabinet by means of hinges 16, said braces comprising spaced members, and connected to the upper ends of said members are boXes or sleeves 17 each provided with a binding screw 18 to bear against the lower end of a supporting bar 19 adapted to engage a recess a undcrneath the member 13 to hold the same in adjusted position to support the ironing board members 13 in horizontal position, as shown in Fig. 1. Pivoted to the sides 4 of the cabinet are brackets 20, said brackets each having an upwardly extending outer end 21. These brackets are pivoted on pins 22, and stops 23 are secured to the sides 4 for supporting said brackets when thrown outward in position for use, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4.
The stand or cabinet may be used for various purposes such as containing the various articles necessary for the operation of ironing. When it is desired to use the device as an ironing board the members 13 are raised and the supporting members 19 are engaged at -their upper ends with recesses a in the underside of the ironing board. The brackets 20 are thrown outward, and in this condition the stand forms a firm and eflicient ironing board. When it is desired to again use the stand! as a cabinet the binding screws 18 are loosened7 and the supports 19 are pushed down between the spaced members of the brace 15 and thrown up underneath the ironing board members 13, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2. The brackets 20 are then thrown up, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that an ironing stand made in accordance with my invention can be moved about `from place to place on the casters 2 and provides a very useful piece of furniture and is readily available as an ironing stand whenever required.
I claim ,An ironing stand comprising a flaring base mounted upon casters, a cabinet secured centrally to said base, said cabinet having a flaring top, ironing board members hinged to the opposite sides of said top, parallel brace members hinged to the cabinet near the base, supporting members adjustably connected to the parallel brace members for supporting the ironing board members in eX- tended position, said supporting members adapted to slide between the parallel brace members, and a sleeve provided with a binding screw for holding each of said support. ingmembers in adjusted position.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in. presence of two witnesses.
