Description

@anni @with waited iairt `IRAFFLannees, or PAWl PAW, MICHIGAN;
" "Letters Patent No. 95,217, elated September 28, 1-869.
` IMPRVEMENT IN' STUMP-EXTRA-CTQR The Schedule 'referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it mwym,` concern l Beit known that I, Inn FLANDERS, of Paw Paw, in thecounty of 'Van Buren, and State of Michigan, `have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stump`-Extraotors; and I doth'erelby declare that the follow/ing is a true and-correct description of the "same, reference being hadltoth'e accompanying drawings, and the letters-of reference marked thereon, which constitute a partlof this specication.
The object of my invention is to provide amachine for extracting stumps, in suoli a mannar as that new power and purchase may be obtained after thestump'is started from its bed, `without losing any of the advantage gained, and without removing from the stump the lifting-chain,
'lo enable others skilled inztheart-to construct and l operate my invention, I will proceed towdescribe it more fully: l i
` Figure l is aperspctiveview of my machine, showing all the parts in detail. a
Figure 2 is a side view, withone end of frame removed..` l Y a w I construct a strong frame, with sills A A, Vposts -B B, braces `e c e c,`seeured to sills by means of'chains a c a a, and cross-beam My posts, B Ihstand perpcndionlarly, while the braces incline in two directions, thus giving great strength and-security. Y
Suspended to the'cross-,beam Dis a sweep, E, having foi-its fulcrum` a link and staple, the link passing v lig. 1, to enable the lifting-chain J' to be moved toward or from the fulcrum, as desired, so that the liftingfarm ofthe sweep may bemade long or short, at will. l
Near `the end oif'lthe lifting-arm ofthe sweep, on both sides, an iron plate, f j, bolted on by bolts extending through thesweep. l v
-llassing through these plates is a shaft, s, with two cog-"wheels, notshown in drawings, which work the two coggedjrails g g ot'- thc sliding'fulcrum o.
"lhe two rails g g are independent, and are heldin place by a roller, x, which is turned down so as to leave shoulders for eachv one to run between.
On'the inner end o f thesetwo'rails rests a large iron pin, whichsupports a strong link, through which passes the lifting-chain J as shown in iig. 2.
By means of the crank K, the rails g g are moved forward or back.- i A To eachend of the cross-beam is suspended a pulley, hh. l v l Below those, and secured to one of' the braces and the posts,v are crank-shafts, L L, each having on the end a ratchet-wheel, k, with pawl, as shown in fig.` l.
Extending from the crank-shafts, and running over i the pulleys It h, are ropes, j j, with hook in the ends. .The manner ofoperating my machine is as follows: Placing it above a stmnp, I lower the liftingarm and place the lifting-chain about they stump with a halfhitch. I then lower the block H, and hook it to the lifting-chain. I run. the movable 'fulcrum' o back, to
make a short arm, so asto get great power. Then,
hooking my team to the end of rope F, at hook e I am ready to operate upon the stump.
By locking my block H to the lifting-chain, I secure all the power ofthe machinefor thelifting ofthe stump. When ILhave `exhausted the scope of the sweep, I attach the sidehopes jj, by hooking them into the `lifting-chain, and then wind them both up taut, so
that I hold the stump at the poiut'to which it has been raised.
I then slacken the rope F, so as to lower the liftingarm ofthe sweep, when I run the movable fulcrum out, and lthus make a long arm, and again apply `my power'and remove myl stump, without disturbing my lifting-chain or readj usting-the same.
Having thus fully described my invention, l lVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
k1. The sliding fulcrum o, with cogged rails y g, crank It, plates f f, roller x, andcogged wheels, on shaft s, as ,combined and operated, for the use and purpose as specified.
2. The crank-shafts L L,ratchetwl1eels and pawls lc lc, pulleys 7th, and ropes jj, as' combined and opertted, for 'the use and purpose herein specied and set Orth. i
3. A stump-extractor, as constructed, combined, and operated, for theuse and purpose as specified and herein set forth.
In testimony whereof', I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of tworsubscribing witnesses. l
Y IRA FLANDERS.
Witnesses d l A. H. HURON,
ORAN W. ROWLAND.
