Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed September 28, 1909. Serial No. 519,917.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. SHIELDS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Afton, in the county of Union and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cabinets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to new and useful improvements in cabinets and more particularly to that class adapted to be used by druggists and my object is to provide means for holding a plurality of assorted labels and retaining the same in convenient reach.

A further object is to provide means whereby said labels may be readily obtained and removed from the receptacle.

A further object is to provide suitable compartments for the reception of books, etc.

A still further object is to provide means for holding prescriptions in convenient reach and a still further object is to provide suitable drawers for the cabinet and a still further object is to provide a writing space and position thereover a glass covering.

Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings forming part of this application, Figure 1 is a front elevation of the cabinet. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical sectional view therethrough, and, Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one tier of the label holding compartments.

Referring to the drawings in which similar reference numerals designate correspond ing parts throughout the several views, 1 indicates the frame of my improved cabinet, the end walls of which are swelled or curved forwardly at their lower ends and at a distance from the end walls are partitions 2 and between said partitions are provided compartments 3, into which may be stored books or similar articles, the upper portion of the space between the partitions being covered by walls 4-, to which are secured hooks 5 and on said hooks are to be placed prescriptions, the hooks being so arranged as to securely retain the prescriptions thereon.

Between the partitions 2 are placed receptacles 6, in which the labels are to be placed and each receptacle is divided into a number of stalls or compartments 7 through the medium of partition walls 8 and in order to readily grasp the labels when removing the same from the stalls, the forward wall of the receptacle is provided with a plurality of notches or recesses 9, which extend downwardly from the upper edge wall of the receptacle, there being a notch for each compartment and in this manner the labels can be readily grasped when being removed from the stall. The receptacle 6 and stalls therein are made in various sizes to accommodate the different sizes of the labels and in order to arrange the receptacles whereby access may be readily had to any one of the stalls and at the same time lend a pleasing effect to the cabinet, the receptacles are gradually stepped inwardly from the lower to the upper tier of receptacles and are supported between the partitions 2 by means of rods 10, the outer ends of the rods 10 being attached to the rear faces of the receptacle, while the rear ends of the rods are attached to the rear walls of the frame. In order to provide a space upon which to disclose the form of labels in each stall or compartment, the rear wall 11 of each compartment is extended upwardly above the edge of the compartment and to a height in registration with or slightly above the bottom of the next succeeding receptacle, the exten sion of the wall in this manner, not only providing a space upon which to indicate the contents of the compartments 7 but also to cover the space between each succeeding rcceptacle.

The base 12 of the cabinet has drawers 13 positioned therein, which are adapted to contain any desired article such as prescription blanks and similar articles, while by terminating the receptacles a distance above the upper wall of the base, said wall may be used for writing, a section of glass 14 or similar substance being embedded in the top of the base to provide a smooth surface upon which to position the writing material.

By constructing the cabinet in the manner disclosed, it will be readily seen that the various labels will be conveniently positioned for obtaining the same and that a large variety of the labels may be placed in the cabinet at once and retained in a separated position. It will likewise be seen that by positioning the lowermost receptacle a distance above the base of the cabinet, the top of said base may be used as a writing table when it is desired to fill out the labels after the same have been removed from the Patented Mar. 15, 1910.

receptacles and it will further be seen that by constructing the receptacles and supporting rods of metal and suspending them in the manner shown, the cabinet may be very cheaply and at the same time strongly and durably constructed.

What I claim is:

1. The herein described cabinet comprising the combination with a base and side and end walls on said base; of a plurality of receptacles and rods supporting said receptacles from said rear wall, each sru-ceeding rod being of less length than the preceding rod and positioned one above the other, whereby the receptacles will be suspended in difierent planes and in stepped relation with each other.

2. In a cabinet, the cmnbination with a frame; of a plurality of receptacles, supporting rods for said receptacles, said rods being 2 positioned one above the other, whereby each 1 succeeding receptacle will be positioned in a plane above and in the rear of the preceding receptacle, the rear walls of the receptacles being extended above the normal 2 height of the receptacle and the forward wall of the receptacle having a plurality of notches therein.
