Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 15, 1910.
Application filed September 4, 1909. Serial No. 516,198.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CONSTANT Bnanns, a subject of the Queen of the Netherlands, and resident of Hilversum, Netherlands, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Sandals for Swimmers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to sandals for swimmers which are constructed in such a manner that they considerably accelerate the speed of the swimming.
The sandals for swimmers further can serve to facilitate the walking upon marshy ground and they can be arranged to serve as stilts.
In the accompanying drawings the improved sandals for swimmers are shown by way of example in Figure 1 in a ground plan view. Fig. 2 is a view from below and Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the sandal. Fig. t shows a modified form of the lateral movable wings.
The sandals for swimmers are constructed as follows At both sides of the sole a which is to be laced to the foot, wings 7), c are hinged. The inner wing Z) is smaller than the outer wing so that the two inner wings do not interfere the one with the other. A. cross rod cl fixed to the sole a serves to limit the up motion of the movable side wings. On the lower surface of the sole a two pivot-bolts 1', 7e are arranged which serve to secure the lateral wings I), c in the position at the same plane as the sole a, for example if the sandal is to be used for walking upon marshy ground. The pin Z which is removably screwed into the sole a permits the use of the sandals as stilts. The side wings I), 0 could further be hollow as shown in Fig. 4E.
The swimming sandals operate as follows z-The sandals which are attached to the foot in any suitable manner move with the same. If now the swimmer bends his legs to pull them under the breast, the movable side wings b, 0 stand at right angles to the sole and do not impede in the least the free movement of the legs if however the swimmer throws his legs back the useful surface of the feet which acts upon the water is considerably increased by the side wings b, c which go up until they abut against the cross rod (Z; the speed of the swimmer therefore is considerably increased.
1 claim Improved sandals for swimmers comprising in combination a sole to be laced to the foot, an inner movable wing hinged to the inner side and an outer larger movable wing hinged to the outer side of the sole, a cross rod fixed to the sole for limiting the up motion of the movable wings, and pivot bolts upon the lower surface of the sole for maintaining the wings on the same plane as the sole and a pin removably screwed in the sole for adapting the sandals to be used as stilts, substantially as described and shown and for the purpose set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
CONSTANT BRANDS.
